I would love for someone to develop any statistic that is fool proof and compelling past the final score in this sport, including passing.

In such a dynamic team game as this, there is many way to win or lose a game.

The closest statistic would probably be time of possession or turnovers.

Some coaches like the "Toxic differential". It's a combination of turnover differential and big plays (I think it was 20+ yards) given up and made. It's not foolproof, but it's the closest thing to it.

Billick used to love it, at least.

Note.. the two teams with a 1.74 pass to run ratio were eliminated yesterday.

Pack - I've been through hundreds of stats (literally). You're right - there is no foolproof stat. I'm getting pretty sick of hearing cliches for that very reason.

That said, the closest we can have for a fool proof stat is to finish the regular season with a top 5 D. Please see my thread in the Packers have the #2 D in the Packers section for my breakdown.

EDIT: Actually, I'll just copy and paste it for you.

#1 Ds:
66 Packers
69 Chiefs
72 Dolphins
73 Dolphins
78 Steelers
82 'Skins
84 Niners
85 Bears
90 Giants
96 Packers
00 Ravens
02 Bucs
03 Pats
08 Steelers

#2 Ds:
74 Steelers
75 Steelers
81 Niners
86 Giants
91 'Skins
93 Cows
95 Cows
04 Pats

#3 Ds:
67 Packers
89 Niners
05 Steelers

#4 Ds:
68 Jets
99 Rams

#5 Ds:
70 Colts
79 Steelers
92 Cows

As you can see, the vast majority of SB winners had a top 5 D. Even of those not in the top 5, there were several #6's and #7s.

I'm pretty sure top 5 D > turnover ratio and top 5 D > time of possession. If you want to check out those stats, feel free. I'm pretty sure I'm right though.

Shawn, what database are you using for assembling those statistics?

Either NFL.com or Pro Football reference.. one of the two.. more than likely NFL.com as they are as official as one can get.
