A GREAT article by Colleen over at Pocket Doppler

A Violent Femmes View What Might Have Been

Posted on | January 11, 2011 | 1 Comment | by Colleen

On to the second round of the playoffs, baby! The Packers are headed back to the house of the Dirty Birds, this time to pluck and roast them, in order to make that title game in Seattle. Come ON Seahawks! (I know that is SO not going to happen, but if it does and the Packers win I can go to the NFC Championship game. Which would not, as they say, suck.)

For quite a while now as the Packers have become stronger I have heard a lot of comments along the lines of just think what well be like next year when everyones back. The thought of having Jermichael Finley back makes me giddy, Ill admit; Ive said Wait until next year too.

But.

What if the Packers hadnt been decimated by injuries this year? What if the defense hadnt gone down one by one? What if Ryan Grant and Jermichael Finley had made it out unscathed?

I think the Packers might not have been in the playoffs.

Dont get me wrong, weve missed all of the guys on IR and I will be delighted to get them back. This team had a lot of pressure and expectations, both internally and externally. There was Super Bowl talk in the locker room. McCarthy even uttered those words. This was supposed to be a cake walk through the NFC North and into a first round bye. There were going to be home playoff games this year. There seemed to be perhaps a bit too much confidence, which can be a season killer, oddly enough. In a room full of superstars, egos can flare and conflicts that hobble a team can arise. The number of so called superstars in the Packers locker room has dwindled alarmingly this season.

This team has seen their hopes of a post-season run potentially dashed with every injury, and with every injury someone has stepped up and shown the right stuff. Sam Shields for heavens sake? Tom Crabtree (much as I love him, he was a surprise making the team)? John Kuhn? ERIK WALDEN????

Because of fate and bad luck, weve got a bunch of hungry young men out to prove themselves. In that sense, Shields, Starks, Kuhn, Crabtree etc. are much the same as QB 1. Theyve got fires in their guts and chips on their shoulders. The better they play and the further the Packers go, the brighter their futures will be.

Because of the adversity theyve faced, the need for so many to work so hard just to prove worth that is not assumed because of past performance, this team really is functioning as that a full team. Its great to see.

It can carry them all the way to Dallas.

Forget next year. Im enjoying right now.

I agree with this 1,000%. I have said many times this year that a lot of our injuries this season have been blessings in disguise.

Ted knows what hes doing. These no name back ups are good players, which is why I havent used the whoa is me, we lost because we have too many injuries card after losses this year.

Im glad someone else finally agrees with me on this.

What are you trying to say?

My week 5 only round 5 banner doesn't count.

My point.. your not solo upon your thoughts.. so the finally agrees statement is hardly valid. IMO.

So I guess that before all of the injuries the Packers were a bunch of egomaniacal prima donnas who weren't even going to make the playoffs. Sorry, I don't buy it.

Sure, the offense was sputtering early in the season, but it was mostly because of poor O-line play and the fact that Brandon Jackson was unable to fill Ryan Grant's shoes. When Finley went down, the Packers were 3-1. Matthews got hurt in that same game, against the Redskins, and missed the next game, which they lost to the Dolphins. Both losses were in overtime.

It would be very rare and probably unprecedented for a team with this many injuries to win a championship or even come close to winning one. I would love to see them do it, but the odds are against them much more heavily than they would be if so many players weren't on IR.

Articles like this are good motivational tools (heck, I got excited when I read it) but my opinion of this team and its coach is higher than the writer's. I think that without so many injuries they would've fixed the early season problems and won more games than they did.

Aside from Finley, and maybe Grant, none of the injured players were superstars that couldn't be replaced.

Bishop > Barnett
Peprah > Burnett
Zombo, Walden = Chillar, Jones

Shields > Al Harris
Bulaga = Tauscher

I agree with you there. And although I'm a bigger Grant fan than most, he's not a dominant player. The problem was that they lacked depth at RB, and possibly that's been been fixed with Starks. Finley was the only injured player who was irreplaceable.

Maybe one quibble would be that although rookie Bulaga=this year's Tauscher, he does not equal the Tauscher of a couple years ago.

What's been amazing is that none of the replacements have been total dogs. The depth of this roster has been astounding. The first indication of that was when so many of our castoffs got picked up by other teams after the final cutdown.

I still wouldn't go so far as to say that the Packers are better because of the injuries, though.

IronMan stole my comment from the chat! 😛

Green > Harrell

I don't like Bulaga at RT, everytime I watch him, he's getting beat. I didn't notice that with Tauscher so I'm going to say we are weaker at RT.

Finley > Quarless (duh, right) - I do think losing Finley helped get the WR's back on the map.

What if?

Crosby makes the FG against the Redskins.

Rodgers scores instead of fumbling on the goalline at Atlanta.

The Packers are the #1 seed hosting the Bears and Seattle is at Atlanta.

Because its just that easy, right? Team doesn't get over confident or anything.

Sorry, just sick of people saying that. Its not that cut and dry. There's a domino effect to things. Not saying its not interesting perspective, but its just an incomplete one that I feel is more suitable when the season is over, not when we're one of eight remaining teams. 🙂

At the same time, it'd be nice if they stopped these ugly 14 point swings.

Are we talking about all the injuries or only a select few?

Personally, I don't see how you can argue the Packers are a better because of the injuries. Teams grow over the course of the season and the Packers would have grown just as easily with Jermichael Finley and Ryan Grant in the lineup. I also believe Morgan Burnett is a better player than Charlie Peprah. Peprah's problems have been well disguised by Dom Capers.

My point is that some of the injuries have unveiled some talent. Desmond Bishop is an upgrade over Nick Barnett. I agree with that. I also like what I have seen from Erik Walden and the addition of Howard Green has been outstanding. But the Packers are a better team with Ryan Grant, Jermichael Finley, and Morgan Burnett. Make no mistake about that.
