Thinking over the new Overtime Rule that gives the ball back to the other team if the team winning the toss scores a FG is a plus for the Packers.

The odds of any opponent we face scoring 0 or 3 is much greater than a team getting a TD against our D. While this is true for all teams the odds are in the favor of the teams that allow the fewest TD's.

What would suck is if the Packers go toe to toe with a team and get it into overtime only to see a KO return by the other team back to the 40 and only have to go about 25 yards to win the game. A scenario we have seen too often.

If you add in the fact that we will be on the road throughout the playoffs and away games tend to be a little closer than home games this rule probably benefits the away team more so than the home team.

Just the way the Packers are built with a stingy D and an offense that can score against anybody I like the rule. We have the kind of team that could allow a FG and easily come back and tie or win the game.

In any event at least whoever wins the coin toss won't win as many games as in the past and for me that's a good thing.

Leave it to the NFL to complicate a rule.. lol.

That said, I agree. this is a better format than what they had. Personally I would rather adopt the NCAA rules.. but again this is better than the previous.

If we adopted the NCAA rules, I would make one change.. each possession would be backed up by 10 yards.. and I would start it deeper than college at the beginning of overtime.

I tried looking this up but couldn't find the answer. What if the Defense gets a safety. Game over?

I like it. If the team scores a TD, then they deserve the win, IMO. If they are held to a FG, then by all means, give the opposing team a chance to score.

That being said, I assume that means that if the second team to score gets a TD, the game is over, and if the second team scores a FG, then OT continues?

Yes. Once both teams have touched the ball (which is the case with a safety, for example), whoever has the most points wins.

Should be, considering the team winning the toss doesn't score and the team that lost to toss gets the 2 pts for the safety.

That's the best way of putting the overtime rule that I've seen. +1

Someone on TV asked if the defensive team decided to open with an onside and it was returned for a TD would the game be over, and yes it would be since both teams touched balls, as nonstop put it.

It sucks if you start with the ball and go 3 and out, score no points and the opposing team gets a FG.

How is that any different from you deferring, they score 3, then you go 3 and out?

Bottom line is that short of a pick 6, your offense needs to produce results in order for you to win.
