We saw late in the Packer game. Jaguars commit a penalty on 4th and 4, 10 yards replay at 4th and 14. On the play Packers get called for defensive hold for 5 yards, rather than being 1st and 10, it should have been 4th and 9.

No play should be an automatic first down if the penalty doesn't take them past the yard to gain line.

Being an automatic first down is supposed to deter players from committing those infractions. You eliminate that, and often times the 5 yards is worth it. It has to be balanced.

That is the normal justification for a spot foul for PI, But that also shouldn't be automatic unless it goes past the line to gain.

The same thing can be said about offensive penalties, Hold rather than let the QB get killed, the penalty is worth the yards. The deterrent should be the penalty itself. Another example wooudl be an offensive PI to break up an interception.

It doesn't balance, it like so much in the game favors the offense.

I won't tell my girls what the consequence will be to breaking a rule. They will weigh the consequence with the action and if the action is worth the consequence, they'll roll with it. When they don't know the consequence, they don't know and the unknown is a bit scarier than the known at times.

I absolutely hate the automatic first rule. Especially if the infraction occurs well before the actual first down line.

The Denver/Carolina game had a 4th and 21 negated by a cheap hand to the face call where the offensive player also had his hands up. It allowed Carolina to get into field position for a winning FG. When they missed I thought the football Gods corrected the wrong. Just like what happened yesterday when we eventually stuffed them on 4th and 1.

The best option for the defense would be 5yards and giving up a first, The worst option on offense is 10 yards and replay the down. That definitely is not balanced punishment.

On a related note, I also hate offsetting penalties. I cannot think of a single reason why a 10-yard penalty and a 15-yard penalty should offset. The net result should be a 5-yard penalty against whichever team committed the 15-yard infraction.

An even more egregious quirk in the rules is that multiple penalties cannot be assessed against a team on the same play. I have literally seen a team have two 15-yard penalties offset by a single 10-yard penalty. That makes no sense at all.

Zero2Cool (9-Aug) : Woo-hoo
TheKanataThrilla (9-Aug) : NFL Network is broadcasting the game tonight, but not in Canada. Not sure why as no local television is showing the game.
beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
