There are a number of ways around this

1: Leave it as it is
2: Seed according to win loss record (all divison winners get in)
3: 7 teams from each conference in the playoffs. Only #1 seed gets a bye. The rest play according to w/l record (all division winners get in)
4: 8 teams in the playoffs based on w/l record. (all division winners get in)
5: As 3 and 4 but highest w/l record regardless of if you win division or not thus eliminating the chance of 2 teams with a better record than a division winner missing the playoffs.

if the season goes to 18 games surely the league will also increase the number of playoff spots.

Do the Giants then get the home game, or does the 5th seed get bumped to 4th an awarded the home game?

Seeding would go by record, which is the whole point of this thread and which I've already agreed with. Or are you just messing with me now?

I think the three of us all departed from some indeterminate point and our paths never managed to cross.

Yeah. Maybe I need to rethink this thing about teams needing to be above .500 to get into the playoffs. It seems simple enough to me, but if a lot of people think it would be too complicated when put into practice, then it wouldn't be a good idea.

The seeding should be changed, though. Most of us can agree on that.

Only if they re-seed them based on smaller city population = higher seed.

I think the NFL will reseed playoffs in '11. The Chicago Seahawks game showed why the playoffs would have been better if it was reseeded. Sure, wildcard round was good, but the Seahawks had no business being two games away from the Super Bowl.

If it was reseeded, I think it'd have looked like this.
1 Falcons
2 Bears
3 Saints
4 Eagles
5 Packers
6 Seahawks

Wild Card
Packers @ Eagles
Seahawks @ Saints

Divisional
Packers @ Bears
Saints @ Falcons

Championship
Packers @ Falcons

That's wrong.

1. Atlanta Falcons 13 3
2. New Orleans Saints 11 5
3. Chicago Bears 11 5
4. Green Bay Packers 10 6
5. Philadelphia Eagles 10 6
6. Seattle Seahawks 7 9

Wild Card
Seahawks @ Bears
Eagles @ Packers

Divisional
Packers @ Falcons
Bears @ Saints

And I think it'd be Packers @ Saints for NFC Championship.

I think that's more accurate.

Although of course the Eagles would've played their starters in the final game of the season, so things might've turned out a bit differently. The Bears would've had something to play for too. It didn't look like they held anything back against the Packers in that last game, but possibly they would've approached it a little differently if they had something to play for.
