I was rooting for the Seahawks for the same reason musccy was.

In the chat room, IronMan pointed out the interesting fact that the Raiders were 6-0 in the AFC West and yet missed the playoffs, while the Kansas City Chiefs went 2-4 in the division and made the playoffs. Since divisional games are no more important than any other game anyway (except as an afterthought with tiebreakers), why not seed the playoffs based on regular season record?

Playoff re-seeding

It usually takes an attention-grabbing event to change the NFL rulebook.

Last years Saints-Vikings NFC Championship helped change the overtime rules, at least for the playoffs. Falcons president and co-chair of the NFL Competition Committee Rich McKay hopes that the current state of the NFC West forces the league to change its playoff seeding methods starting in 2011.

Ive brought it up twice and never had real success getting it passed, McKay told NFL Networks Jason La Canfora. I think it something we should consider.

McKay said he supports re-seeding spots 3-6 by record, with division winners not necessarily granted a home game. (Division winners would be guaranteed a playoff spot at any record.) Hes come close to getting the measure passed before, with upwards of 18 votes supporting the idea. 24 owners would need to approve the measure to pass it.

Perhaps having the first 7-9 playoff team in NFL history could inspire such a change. Its almost enough to make us root for the Chiefs, Falcons, Panthers, and Chargers this week.

This will be one of many articles and pleas for re-seeding the playoffs, but it's at least comforting to know someone is getting the ball rolling in an attempt to appease me and Nonstopdrivel.

I didn't know which team was at 6 wins, but that was whom I was pulling for. If the Seahawks upset the Saints, and get past the Bears ... crazy.

I'm not only in favor of reseeding, I'm in favor of discounting teams that are not above .500 from the playoffs. I don't think it would harm the divisional system to do that. This was almost never an issue when divisions had five or more teams in them, but with four-team divisions, it is going to be an issue every so often.

I would not go as far as seeding the entire conference according to record, though. I just think that, in order to make the playoffs, you should have to win more games than you lose. That's the definition of a good team, as opposed to an average or (in the case of the Seahawks) below average team.

How would your system work in practical terms, Greg? For example, what happens if no teams in a division finish above .500?

Duh. How would the rest of the seeds be determined?

From the "duh", I'm not intelligent enough to answer so I'll step aside for someone smart to conclude.

None of them go to the playoffs. Instead, an extra wild card would be awarded to another team in the conference. (This year, that team would be the Giants.)

Do the Giants then get the home game, or does the 5th seed get bumped to 4th an awarded the home game?
