Agreed that Masthay had a great game (a 62 yarder in the 1st half as well, I believe).

Also, I don't know where the blame lies with the OL - personel evaluation/drafting (thus Ted) or where exactly the coaching buck stops but either way, this line couldn't get Jim Brown to 1,000 yards, and it's too bad because with a viable running threat, this game wouldn't have had to fall so much on the shoulders of Flynn (not to mention how it contributed to losses vs. Atlanta and throughout the season)

I cringe every time we go 5 wide or any other pass first formation in short yardage situations. From my perspective, those are the moments where games are won or lost. I like Mike McCarthy a lot, but question his allegiance to the ZBS.

I think we can all agree that Sitton....that mean, nasty brawler....is the centerpiece of the OL for years to come. Why would anyone ask a player like that to dance around in the ZBS when all he wants to do, and is best at, is lock on to a man and dominate.

From my perspective, Campen should be scrapped along with vthe ZBS, and every future OL drafted should be of the Sitton mold....and then go out and physically punish the opponents.

Something that is easy to lose sight of is how well the defense played today.

Cowher would atleast draft a GOOD running back and have a decent oline, instead our GM just worries about being the "youngest team in the league". I see just drafting the guys you want is working real well.

Oh, and did Cowher really have a choice but to run so much? Look at the QB's that he had. Maddox and Roethlisberger (sp?) are nothing even close to Rodgers IMO. Also our WR's are much more talented.

You play to your strengths...

And what is it with Mike McCarthy in key moments? Aaron Rodgers gets his bell rung. The Packers, very appropriately, call a timeout so he can be evaluated on the sidelines. He returns to the line of scrimmage looking like a punchdrunk boxer trying to hold it together in the corner, and they go with five wide, empty backfield? Of course he gets slammed to the turf and is out for the remainder of the game. Why wouldn't they call a run in that first play to give Rodgers a chance to get his feet back under him? I suppose Mike McCarthy will tell us that they didn't get the replay with a clear view of his face until several plays later. Andrew Quarless deserves to be benched for his performance on that play alone. He didn't make the slightest attempt to block his man; he looked like he didn't even want to be on the field.

I was screaming at the tv when that sack happened. That is when you put in Flynn and try and run out the half and give Rodgers a break.
I also don't know why McCarthy didn't call a timeout near the end to try and scheme a high % short yardage play and calm Flynn down.

As for the offensive line, if our line coaching staff isn't summarily fired after that performance, it might be time to call into question the judgment of their superiors. I've been calling for their firing all season (the reduction in sacks notwithstanding), and this just confirms my conviction. Whether it's a lack of talent provided by Ted Thompson, which I doubt, or their inability to coach up the talent they have available, which I suspect, someone needs to take responsibility for the perpetual mediocrity and frequent ineptitude of this line. Rodgers has not shown any significant level of trust in his line in any game so far this season, and the primary reason for the reduction in sack numbers has been his own intrepid evasiveness, which ultimately failed him today. As I've said before, if Aaron Rodgers is lost for any significant period of time this season (by which I mean more than one or two games) due to a lack of protection by the line, the entire offensive coaching staff needs to go. And as far as I'm concerned, this is Ted Thompson's last year of grace in the draft. If this forthcoming draft doesn't SIGNIFICANTLY bolster the level of protection afforded Aaron Rodgers, the offensive scouting staff -- perhaps even Ted Thompson himself -- need to go, his apparently amazing ability to pull together unheralded defensive personnel notwithstanding. At the very least, Thompson should bring in someone dedicated to scouring the ranks for offensive line talent; preferably also an offensive line coach.

This. Although I think we have some potential talent to work with, we still clearly need an upgrade in personnel and/or coaching.

What I did not know until recently was that both of our O-line coaches (Campen and Fontenot) played Center at the pro level. Not saying that completely explains why our O-line seemingly struggles as a whole, but it is interesting that both our O-line coaches played the same position.

Funny thing is that on his Packers bio page, Campen is listed as being instrumental in developing Colledge / Spitz / Moll. Moll is not on our team anymore, Spitz has lost his spot in the starting lineup and was yanked for performance reasons today, and Colledge is at best an average starter. Real solid endorsement there, Campen.

What is maddening is that our O-line was getting beat with 4 man rushers, nothing overly aggressive or anything. Simple. Four. Man. Rushes. All game long.

That's inexcusable.

That's something I've crowed about for awhile. OL coaches coaching a scheme they didn't play and only had one year learning it under a coach that did know it.

I said it before, I'll say it again. OL should be big fat powerful men, like the OL we had with Sherman. I'd like that again.

I have a friend that is a big Falcons fan -- take that to mean he follows the team closely and knows football pretty well. He said the Falcons o-line coach that joined their team when Mike Smith came to town improved the unit seemingly over night. Can anyone name a single player offhand from that unit? Me neither. But it plays at an incredibly high level.

I think we need to continue to upgrade players, but feel even more strongly that Campen needs to go. It's just been a consistent weakness for too long.

As long as we can find somebody to replace him that is a "positive-changes-over-night" kind of guy, and we aren't just dropping him because we want the next person to fill in, I'm all for it. If you can upgrade any player position, I say do it. The same should go for the coaches.

Something that saddens me is that Aaron Rodgers' MVP prospects essentially evaporated today. Not only did he fail to complete the game, but Tom Brady had yet another dominant performance against the Bears. Short of a catastrophic failure in the next three weeks, I think Brady is a lock for MVP.

This game was a vivid example of exactly why I hate running quarterbacks. As fun as it is to watch them scramble for those extra few yards or run it in for that clutch touchdown, the fact is they just get hurt too much. It's pretty rare that a running quarterback plays every game in a season (see: Vick, Mike). I'll be surprised if Vick makes it through the rest of this season unscathed.

I'd far rather have a solid pocket quarterback and a serviceable running back than a running quarterback who's constantly being put in harm's way. It was almost inevitable that Rodgers would be put out of a game sometime this season. Hopefully it doesn't happen again, but I'm not optimistic.
