If I had been MM, i would have given up totally on the run and went with the 5 WR set the whole game. Too many 1st downs were wasted on runs that got us nothing.
Go with the 5 WR until Atlanta proved they couldn't stop it. Which they were not stopping it at all.
Too many chances wasted, if you ask me.
Yes, we need a running game. But if it isn't working, go with what IS working for that game.
Maybe we could have won it had he tried that.

Right now, Pack93z is working on his response to this. ;)

+1 by the way. I wouldn't have done 5 WRs sets the whole game, but a combination of passing sets with the occasional draw play as our only running (not including scrambling).

It's clear that our TD drives were mostly passing. This should have been a TD drive and we didn't waste a single play with a run:

1st-10, GB15 13:08 A. Rodgers passed to B. Swain to the right for 31 yard gain. Atlanta committed 15 yard penalty
1st-10, ATL39 12:44 A. Rodgers passed to J. Nelson down the middle for 6 yard gain
2nd-4, ATL33 12:06 A. Rodgers incomplete pass down the middle
3rd-4, ATL33 11:58 A. Rodgers passed to J. Jones to the right for 9 yard gain
1st-10, ATL24 11:15 A. Rodgers passed to J. Jones to the right for 5 yard gain
2nd-5, ATL19 10:37 A. Rodgers passed to J. Nelson down the middle for 5 yard gain
1st-10, ATL14 9:42 A. Rodgers passed to J. Jones to the right for 8 yard gain
2nd-2, ATL6 8:55 A. Rodgers passed to J. Jones to the right for 4 yard gain
1st-2, ATL2 8:18 A. Rodgers incomplete pass to the left
2nd-2, ATL2 8:15 A. Rodgers rushed to the left for 1 yard gain
3rd-1, ATL1 7:32 A. Rodgers rushed to the left for no gain. A. Rodgers fumbled. M. Peterson recovered fumble

TD drive. Note the one run (a loss):

1st-10, GB20 10:05 A. Rodgers passed to D. Driver to the left for 9 yard gain
2nd-1, GB29 9:26 B. Jackson rushed to the right for 1 yard loss
3rd-2, GB28 8:38 A. Rodgers passed to G. Jennings to the right for 34 yard gain. G. Jennings fumbled. K. Hall recovered fumble
1st-10, ATL38 8:28 A. Rodgers rushed up the middle for 9 yard gain
2nd-1, ATL29 7:44 A. Rodgers incomplete pass down the middle
3rd-1, ATL29 7:37 A. Rodgers passed to J. Nelson to the left for 28 yard gain
1st-1, ATL1 7:17 A. Rodgers rushed up the middle for 1 yard touchdown. M. Crosby made PAT

Our other TD drive. Jackson actually managed positive yards on this one so I guess the 2 rushes weren't a waste this time. Note that it was 14 passes and 2 runs. That's about the right amount of balance. ;)

1st-10, GB10 5:54 B. Jackson rushed to the left for 5 yard gain
2nd-5, GB15 5:30 A. Rodgers passed to A. Quarless to the left for 11 yard gain
1st-10, GB26 5:07 A. Rodgers passed to B. Jackson to the left for no gain
2nd-10, GB26 4:31 Green Bay committed 5 yard penalty
2nd-15, GB21 4:26 A. Rodgers passed to A. Quarless down the middle for 19 yard gain
1st-10, GB40 3:45 B. Jackson rushed to the left for 8 yard gain
2nd-2, GB48 3:17 A. Rodgers rushed to the right for 7 yard gain
1st-10, ATL45 3:13 A. Rodgers incomplete pass to the right
2nd-10, ATL45 3:08 A. Rodgers passed to G. Jennings to the right for 15 yard gain
1st-10, ATL30 2:45 A. Rodgers passed to B. Jackson down the middle for 9 yard gain
2nd-1, ATL21 2:14 A. Rodgers incomplete pass to the left
3rd-1, ATL21 2:11 A. Rodgers incomplete pass to the left
4th-1, ATL21 2:03 A. Rodgers passed to J. Jones down the middle for 18 yard gain
1st-3, ATL3 1:54 A. Rodgers sacked by J. Abraham. A. Rodgers fumbled. A. Rodgers recovered fumble
2nd-6, ATL6 1:52 A. Rodgers incomplete pass to the right
3rd-6, ATL6 1:45 A. Rodgers passed to B. Jackson to the right for 1 yard gain
4th-5, ATL5 1:06 Green Bay committed 5 yard penalty
4th-10, ATL10 0:56 A. Rodgers passed to J. Nelson to the left for 10 yard touchdown. M. Crosby made PAT

That's just it....had they gone to the pass more, THEN a run would surprise them, and maybe be a big gain.
Go with what is working. Why waste so many downs?
Yes, we may need a running game when the weather is bad. But we were in a DOME. Weather didn't matter there.
Too many downs wasted with plays that didn't work at all.
Trying the same thing over and over, and it never worked.
The darn it, GO WITH WHAT IS WORKING!!!
Still frustrates me....as you can plainly see! LOL!

Someone... I think it was on the broadcast team pointed out during the game....

That if The Packers abandoned the running game that would take away the majority of passing play calls from the Packers arsenal of plays to run.

The reason being, a majority of the plays are for Aaron to go to the pass out of the option.

It is true. If Aaron never used the run out of the option then the play is essentially taken out of the effective play book. In other words... One must keep the Atlanta D honest, or they would have adjusted and heretofore won way before Rodgers had the most remarkable drive of his career to give the Packers a chance to win it in overtime.

Should have gone to the pass MORE than 35 passing plays to 11 runs by the RBs??? Personally, I'm glad you're not MM, then. He called enough pass plays, thank you.

According to MM, AR had one of his best personal performances ever (and he's had a number of tremendous performances, imo). 344 yds passing. 114 QB rating. 35 pass attempts. AND IT WASN'T ENOUGH TO WIN THE FRIGGIN' GAME.

Calling 11 running plays was NOT what cost us the game, just as a lack of running game was NOT what cost us the game. But I have NO doubt whatsoever that a better running game WOULD have given us a better chance to win the game.

You HAVE to be able to do something other than pass. You HAVE to be able to run on 3rd and 1 and make a 1st down. You HAVE to be able to vary your approach to keep other teams off balance and to take advantage of the other teams weaknesses.

A running game makes your passing game more effective:
a) makes your offense less predictable. Provides additional threats that the defense needs to account for
b) prevents the defense from just teeing off on your quarterback (see a). Slows down the pass rush as they have to account for the RB coming out of the backfield
b) tires out the defense doing b), improving offensive performance late in the game
c) provides a credible threat to improve the effectiveness of your play action passes

You get predictable in this league, and you're going to get beat.

Oh, and on the 5 wide receiver sets (and the 4 WR and 1 TE sets) the weakside defender on Clifton's side kept blitzing and was coming free every play in the 2nd half. AR got the ball, had this guy running free at him, and had to unload the ball immediately on almost every one of those sets.

But hey, we'd have won for sure if EVERY play had been a pass... lol

Man, these Maddenites are sure maddening...

I would not go 5 WR all the time. I would spend the most in 4 WR with Jackson in the backfield as a pass option. He would hold a LBer or S from dropping into coverage opening up the passing game.

Jackson is on pace for 1100 combined yardage and is severely under utilized. if given the rececptions correctly he could push 1500 combined.

Macbob - that's condescending.

OK, you don't have to do anything. There is no law in football that has a minimum number of passes and minimum number of runs.

We lost the game because of a fluke fumble. That's it. 35 pass plays, 11 runs was a pretty good combination. It worked. Had Aaron not fumbled, it would be 24-20 and we wouldn't be having this argument, which is pretty much beating a dead horse.

If we play Atlanta in the Playoffs, you can bet MM will do about the same percentage of pass to run because Atlanta's weakness is defending the pass. I'm very glad MM understands that, and thus I have been backing him in 2010.

And for the love of God, read my post instead of mocking it. I used FACTS to show my point. The pass was working. Except for that fluke fumble. That was a fluke.

And while we're at it, let's take another coach instead of MM. Let's take Belichick vs the Steelers. Knowing that the Steelers are the #1 team in the NFL against the run, Belichick goes all out airborne. The 43 passes vs 24 rushes is highly deceptive as 9 of those rushes were in the 4th Q when the game was already over. Actually, check the game log. Almost all passes for the Pats in the 1st half.

Maybe I should coach an NFL team.

Just face it we are not gonna ever call,in fact any coach in the NFL is not gonna call 5 WR sets all game.If they did our opponent will know what we do.Even if our run game sucks we still need to run the ball then if we didn't run every team will know were 1 dementionable the entire game.
