I thought I would share the letter I received today from the Packers.

Except those two extra games won't be meaningful. They'll merely prolong the period of shitty football we have to endure at the beginning of every season.

Out of curiosity, wonder how many other teams sent similar letters out?

Was it a requirement, or just Mark wanted to keep his fans in the loop?

I always figured the 18 game season proposal was going to be used as a bargaining chip against the union. That letter doesn't necessarily change my theory, but it definitely doesn't strengthen it.

it seems like every 30 years or so, the owners tack on a couple extra games to increase the profits. granted thats about as gradual as it gets, but it's gotta stop somewhere.

more games, bigger rosters, bigger practice squads, bigger contracts....fuck it, lets go with 12 men on the field while we're at it. i actually think an 18 game season would contribute to the softening of our beloved sport if you can believe that.

And i haven't even mentioned the record books. we've got 32 years of records under 16 game seasons. i can get behind a lot of the changes the league has made (challenge system, division realignment, protecting QB's, etc) but lets have some stability in the number of games played.

Much thanks for sharing that, wpr. It's not a bad letter, but at the same time, it's hard not to be cynical. How many times did he mention "player safety"? (Three: I went back and counted.) It almost makes me think that this emphasis on player safety is a public relations ploy. Wait a minute, I already thought that anyway. But now I think that it is being emphasized specifically to make the owners look better during negotiations.

I hate the 18 game season, but I wonder if season ticket holders support it more strongly than the rest of us. It does give you more bang for your buck.

I appreciate you sharing the letter.

It could be condensed to two words; We're trying.

It has to be very tough to plan a hundreds of millions of dollars operation when you don't know what rules you will be operating under in 90 days.

So many of these alleged negotiators do nothing until the last week and then "burn the midnight oil" boasting of how many hours they are putting in after months of doing nothing. I don't think Murphy is that type but he seems to be dealing with a few of those types.

I don't expect a "big break through" until the Scouting Combine.

I would guess all clubs, or at least those that give a rat's ass about the fans, have sent it in order to combat the Unions recent attempt to grab PR via letters to local and state governments bodies.

IMO.. both sides are preparing for what looks inevitable.. a lockout with a delayed start to the 2011 Season.

Or the possibility that the Union decertifies and then things would really get "squirrely", as those waters have never been crossed before.

As the resident psuedo-capologist (retired) -- I vote for a simple 50-50 split.

This is good stuff, imo PFT- League/union squabble over semantics

Eliminate any "set-asides" presently enjoyed by the owners (analgous to tax loopholes)

Rookie salary cap. Let the NFLPA decide how to handle retiree benefits, and then kindly shut the fuck up about it...

Simple. Solved.

Oh I agree Foster.. the middle ground on this should be rather simple.. however the above forgets about one key element that applies pressure in this, but isn't talked about much.

The agents.

I think one of the main sticking points is the Rookie cap.. and how that impacts the agents.. and the pressure they are applying behind the scene.

The other major concession.. the 18 game regular season... and whom pays for it.

The Owners currently collect full revenue for the tickets sold for the "meaningless" preseason games.. however the players don't collect normal game checks.

The players will want to be paid and the owners already have tapped that local revenue stream.. so either the costs will be passed down via ticket increases or the NFL as a whole will have to chip in with the additional TV revenue to supplant the increase in costs.. either that or the Players take less.

Then one could dig into the retired benefits angle.. and make another topic post.

In the end.. we the fans foot the bill but are really just pawns at this point. Pawns with pockets that will be pillaged further.

18 games is going to be more palatable to both sides with a true 50/50 split, coupled with whatever number they come up with for roster size and game-day actives.

Rookie cap savings would enure to existing union members just as much as to owners. At a fixed 50/50 split, the NFLPA would find it virtually impossible to defend the continued escalation in rookie compensation amongst it's own membership. As to the agents, the $$$ would go to the vets, so it isn't like the agents aren't going to see it---they would merely see that cash in a "shifted paradigm", if you will.

They can also decide EQUALLY on the responsibilities to the retirees--- Owners and players can eat that burden 50/50 also. The NFLPA will get a lot less noisy on THAT one when they get to suck on the financial realities as well.

...And make all of the owners open the books. IMO

These players are not poor, and the existing model is not equitable for the players themselves- the rooks are sucking WAY too much out of their "side" of the financial pie. That is SO obvious, to me at least.

beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
