Do we at least get a compensatory pick in the draft for this?

Why am I the only one who's happy to see him go? I never thought he'd step foot on the field this year (do a search of my posts -- I've been saying this the entire offseason), and the last thing I wanted was for him to take up a valuable roster spot. Maybe the Packers can bring him in for a look next year, after he's a year and a half removed from one of the most severe injuries this league has ever seen. I see no way he would have made it through the entire season without reaggravating that knee.

I highly doubt any other team will pick him up, but if one does, I'm willing to bet a week's wages he never starts.

Non- I think like Kampman, Harris was a player that Packers fans just liked so much and it sucks to see such a great person from the Packers organization be let go. He has been around so long it is almost difficult not to like the guy for what he has done.

However, there comes a time when a team must move on from that great player that brought the fans so many good memories. I think the move is smart for the Packers AND for Harris.
He can be viewed as a wasted roster space for the Packers. He has been off the PuP list for 4 weeks now and still has not been cleared to play.
In Harris' case, he would not be a starter for the Packers anymore. We have Hof'er Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams, who has taken his opportunity and succeeded with it. Then we have Sam Shields who has filled in the spot Tramon left open.

I loved the play of Al Harris and hope that I can watch him succeed on another team.

Maybe we actually were being nice to Al Harris by cutting him. Maybe we were upfront with him as far as future plans for next season. Maybe Harris opted to be cut so he could try and get work this season still.

This was the right move by Ted Thompson et al in my opinion. It is this commitment to youth that has seen us develop some of the finest talents in the league. Finley comes to mind.

I love Al Harris, tough son of a bitch. I hope he can make a final hurrah with another team (bar our division).

Also, a big thank you to Sam Shields and Tramon Williams for performing above expectations. It's tough to beat out a mainstay and anytime it happens you have to take your hat off.

Holy shit, what a way to kick it off! My first game, along with Bozz_2006's first game, was against the Vikings at Lambeau on Nov 14 2004, when Longwell hit a 49yd (or so?) FG to win the game. He did the same at the Metrodome. I thought that was an amazing way to begin all of the games that I have seen and will see, but I'd say that you win!

This is a great point. It helps that the Packers can cut Al and haven't been dreaming of his return due to our current secondary's suckage. My wife won't be happy.

packerfanoutwest (12-Aug) : Matt LaFleur: “Highly unlikely” Jordan Love plays more this preseason
dfosterf (12-Aug) : Doubs, Savion Williams, LVN, Musgrave all banged up to one degree or another, missing one here I forget

Zero2Cool (12-Aug) : zero help, dominated. preseason
beast (12-Aug) : QB Jordan Love has surgery

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
