All right I know I'll be the biggest asshole in the world for this one, but why should the recipient of any type of land, property, or money not be taxed on it? Isn't receiving goods for nothing the same thing as say welfare to deadbeats? Why should being related to somebody change the fact that you are receiving something free of charge. There are plenty of ways to pass on your goods to your offspring, but foresight has to used. My grandma held on to all possessions with an iron fist so the nursing home got it all, and I really didn't care because she earned it all and used it for her care. I'm not counting on much from my parents, and whatever there is, I'll be willing to give Uncle Sam his share because I accept those laws as part of my citizenship.

I find the tax conundrum in this country fascinating. Taxes have to be assessed to pay for all of the services rendered by the government. I'm always willing to listen to any type of tax reform, but the ideas need to come from reality and not fantasy. I actually had a guy tell me one time that taxes should be abolished and the local churches can help people in need. I told him he had a lot more faith in human beings than I did.

Fire away.

Your argument assumes that the people ultimately receive the land in suzerainty from their government, as though this republican, representative government somehow rules sovereign like a king. I categorically disagree with that notion. The ultimate sovereign in our Republic is the people themselves; they own their land and the government has no claim to it. That's the reason why I vehemently disagree with property taxes (as did the Founding Fathers), because they effectively declare that citizens do not own their own land but instead rent it from the government. The only property rightfully owned by the government is that which it purchases for its necessary functions. Everything else is in the hands of the people, and there is no reason why they should pay tribute on that which is rightfully theirs.

I would rather have the immediate relatives of the deceased receive the "gift" of a lifetime's labor, versus the many complete strangers who would otherwise receive this "gift" through taxation of the estate and its inevitable redistribution to others.

Look, I am happy to pay taxes...civilized society demands that. However, if we are completely honest with ourselves, at least 30 percent of every tax dollar taken is wasted or used for vote buying.

Just my thoughts.....

One thing I dislike about politics (there are many) is that we vote for a candidate that is supposed to best represent what we agree with. The problem is that that can't happen.

For example look at the tax issue we are discussing right now. There are so many different points to consider yet this is only one of over a handful of issues we're voting on.

What is the individual supposed to do when he agrees with the Democrats on social issues but with the Republicans on financial issues?

Then you have the people that just fall into what they've been raised as. Your typical American citizen. For much of my life I was guilty of voting how I was raised to vote and agreeing with the politicians that happened to align with "my" party. But I questioned a few things once and now I've forever changed. I look at all the issues and find that I can't settle on one specific candidate. The lesser of two evils argument is quite applicable here. I still choose to exercise my right to vote but sometimes I don't know why. The interesting thing is the more I read about Libertarians the more I begin to agree with them.

DJ - Bill Clinton was a social liberal but our last fiscally conservative President. From a financial perspective only, he was 10 times more Republican than GWB.

Myself, I'm registered Libertarian. I think Libertarians are a bunch of nutcases but their philosophy is the closest to mine. Democrats want to be your mom, Republicans want to be your dad. I hate them both. I like making my own decisions, for better or worse.

Please - you don't own shit in this life and that includes your own soul. If you live withing the borders of the Louisiana Purchase, your family got their land for next to nothing anyway. So what if the government wants to take a little bite out of your ass.

I just like the libertarian views on privacy and freedom over your own body.

On another note Facebook sucks at this time. My liberal friends are all whining and my conservative friends are all whining about their liberal friends whining. The funny thing is 4 years ago you could replace "liberal" with "conservative" and vice-versa and the statement is still correct. One problem I had though was one of my friends was deleting his friends on Facebook because of their whining. I just don't like that so I'll post my response (taken from Facebook).

I just think it's stupid to let a person's political position influence their status as a person you consider a friend. Granted their political whining or bragging may be annoying but outside of election times a person's political stance rarely matters. I don't think a person's political opinion should completely affect the way you view that person. And despite the connections people can make it shouldn't be a reflection of their personality or personal morality.

For most Americans political stance basically points to their history, their parents and what classes or sect of society they were raised in; few voters tend to be critical thinkers. For most voters instead of seeing "Politician A vs. Politician B vs. Politician C" they see "Democrat vs. Republican vs. Independent." Instead of separating candidates into their stances and particular knowledge of the issues or researching a candidates background they will be voting for what they see at face value. I myself agree with different politicians on different issues at varying levels making it impossible to actually approve or pick one over the other.

It's like a rivalry in sports. For us Wisconsinites an proper example might be whatever party you favor is the Packers and the other party is the Vikings. Nothing the Vikings say will make you agree with them, they're the fricking Vikings for God's sake! It's about time people actually started learning about who and what they're voting for and realizing that the majority of politicians are schmucks or power players.

What do you think about letting a person's political stance dictate who you associate yourself with?

For me, as long as they don't let their political opinions trickle into everyday interaction I really couldn't care less. Unless we're talking the extreme side here.

DJ - That's a good question. I got friends all over the spectrum and would rather not discuss politics, religion, or abortion with friends. Those are 3 issues that too many people aren't mature enough to discuss. With exceptions, of course, but I usually don't bring up those 3.

That's ok Tezzy. I'm pro-pot but this one puts anyone over 21 in jail for 5 years for giving a joint to a minor? Come on. Half the people I know here have smoked one with their kids.

So I didn't even vote on Prop 19. I just left that one blank. They should just legalize it completely.

beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere

beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?

wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
