A vivid memory I have growing up in Packer country is Sunday morning church services. I grew up in a small town of 1,000 people about an 1 south of Green Bay. As is normal for most small town Wisconsin kids, we went to church almost every Sunday morning, unless we were going to a Packer game.

So, this is where it got tricky for Wisconsin churches...the battle between Sunday morning attendance and getting people out of church in time for a noon Packer game start. It was always funny as the sermons were normally 10 minutes shorter on Packer Sunday's and the services would wrap up around 11:30 AM. Plenty of time to get home and watch the game.

I remember when we had a new pastor join our church...he was from somewhere that obviously didn't have football as a priority. I think that he learned pretty quickly after the first couple of times that he gave an extended sermon and people started to leave around 11:30 to get home. Funny stuff watching people try to sneak out of their pew without causing offense with the pastor.

So, as we all know, the Packers is a religion of its own and people will do some crazy things to prove it. Just ask the Packer Pope...he'll take care of you on Sunday mornings if you skip or leave church early! :)

When my dad went off to Montana for grad school, we rarely got to see televised Packers games (unless they played the Seahawks or Broncos). No Packershome back then to get my fix. Since we were a whole time zone earlier, there was no chance in getting out of church in time to see the game.

On those occassions, I fondly remember sharing with my Sunday School class (which was before the service) that I didn't have to go to church that day because the Packers were playing. I'm sure the lady thought my mom was a nut for agreeing to this. Folks there didn't grow up in NE Wisconsin either though so I guess they'll never get it.

Nice post wrolly.

Of course God is a Packer fan,
he put the "G" on the helmet.

It's also why there is no dome allowed on Lambeau Field,
so he can watch the games.

Cool. Nice read. I like getting to know some personal stuff about posters.

Well, I'm not sure whether or not God really is a Packers fan. I do know for a fact though that God hates the Vikings. He's really showing it this year.

Man, I wish when I was growing up as a kid I had lived in Wisconsin. Growing up in St. Louis, no one cared about football and we never made it back home in time for opening kickoff. It was even worse for me when I was in high school as I was dating this girl who lived a good 30 minutes from me and with whom I went to church. At least then I could check the scores and stats on my phone every so often when no one was looking.
