A vivid memory I have growing up in Packer country is Sunday morning church services. I grew up in a small town of 1,000 people about an 1 south of Green Bay. As is normal for most small town Wisconsin kids, we went to church almost every Sunday morning, unless we were going to a Packer game.
So, this is where it got tricky for Wisconsin churches...the battle between Sunday morning attendance and getting people out of church in time for a noon Packer game start. It was always funny as the sermons were normally 10 minutes shorter on Packer Sunday's and the services would wrap up around 11:30 AM. Plenty of time to get home and watch the game.
I remember when we had a new pastor join our church...he was from somewhere that obviously didn't have football as a priority. I think that he learned pretty quickly after the first couple of times that he gave an extended sermon and people started to leave around 11:30 to get home. Funny stuff watching people try to sneak out of their pew without causing offense with the pastor.
So, as we all know, the Packers is a religion of its own and people will do some crazy things to prove it. Just ask the Packer Pope...he'll take care of you on Sunday mornings if you skip or leave church early! :)
