Clay Matthews draws penalties and double teams. His presence makes our team better.

Throw in clutch tackles by Woodson, and beautiful interception by Nick Collins, and you had a defense that was on point tonight.

There were some problems, but this is against Brett Favre.

Well Peterson ripped us for 170 tonight, but Brett made sure to fuck all that up.

Exactly. Peterson hasn't proven that he can consistently carry teams on his back. Let him battle for his yards.

I completely agree with the title of this thread. With that said I think CJ Wilson played a great game tonight. In a Viking's drive in the 4th quarter he was responsible for two consecutive run stops. From what I understand a 3-4 DE is more of a strong, big, physical space eater and gap filler that gives the linebackers and other defenders opportunities to make a play. Wilson mostly shed blocks and went underneath lineman to make plays which is a bit unorthodox but was effective tonight. I still think we need to upgrade our depth at the position. What ever happened to Toribio lol? (To Z2C, NSD or anyone: How do you put a lol correctly in a sentence?)

I didn't watch Wynn specifically tonight but I saw him (94) a lot on the field tonight.

I always thought since the final roster announcement that we could have done with one more D-lineman, at the expense of a tight end.

Truth is though, you can never predict what is going to happen.

We lose Finley and temporarily lost Lee - justifies four tight ends.

We have Jolly suspended, Jenkins and Pickett get injured - end result is an offensive lineman plugging the gap.

In hindsight, I don't think you can have a group of personnel that can cover every dot of an injury crisis.

Would be nice to have Reggie White though!

Perhaps I should clarify what I meant: CJ Wilson and Jarius Wynn played quite well tonight all things considered. I'm not upset that we have those two on the depth chart, or that injuries have now forced them into bigger roles (this scenario is less than ideal, though).

I am much more upset that our depth, right now, consists of TJ Lang and Mike Montgomery. That is, to put kindly, pathetic. Lang is an O-linemen and Montgomery was so miscast as a 3-4 DE that it is not even funny. In other words, with our pathetic depth, we will be asking Wilson and Wynn to shoulder the load of even more snaps. That is not exactly an ideal situation, but our inability to have adequate (capable) subs to spell them is appalling.

If Jenkins or Pickett can come back next week, it will a much needed boost. If we had one position which we need our starters back at right now, it is DE.

However, Pickett reinjured his ankle, and Jenkins was limping pretty bad according to live reports from a couple of the beat writers. I'm writing this more with the view that these guys will be out, or at least heavily limited for the next game.

So, we could use some help in the form of a capable body (or two) that can come in and spell Wilson and Wynn. Because as it currently stands, after these two DEs, we're have non-existent depth. Ted has to give the coaches something to work with.

I refused to get frustrated with Capers either. The defense was clearly limited in what they could do and what formations they could use.

And yet when we did sack Favre, it had fantastic results . . .

Yes, I know we couldn't apply pressure every play. I just hated watching our LBs hanging back. I was surprised Favre didn't exploit the shallow to mid routes more.

I was amazed at the number of plays in which we had two down linemen and one shallow linebacker . . . or no down linemen at all.

We really didn't have a choice.

Raji took just about every snap. That's not a good thing for a 340 pound man. I imagine he was gassed by the 4th quarter. Putting in either Wynn or Wilson helps little when you're trying to rush the passer. Might just as well clear out that entire D-line and work around with some speed and confusion. Works wonders for the Pats, as well.

That package confused the heck out of Favre, as well.

As to the original post... I agree, but you really can't see this coming.

The amount of injuries coming into this game was pretty bad. We still had a decent rotation of 5 linemen, though. Having a freak injury during warm-ups is something you don't expect. Then having Pickett go out halfway is just brutal. I think we expected to play a lot of 2 linemen packages, anyway, so 5 should've been enough.
