Throw a ball left handed if you are right handed. How easy is that?

"Greg C." wrote:

So taking a step with your left foot is just as hard, if you are right handed, as throwing a ball with your left hand? I don't buy it.

Er, wait a minute, it's not even that. The right tackle steps with his RIGHT foot first anyway, as opposed to his left. So maybe Bulaga is left handed? Or left footed? Gosh, this is confusing.

I still think Bulaga stunk today and didn't look so good last week either. Hopefully he improves. It's just not a promising start for his career.

Not the same as throwing, but when you do something the same for 4-5-10 years you do it without thinking. My guess is that is teh way Bulaga is. He has been drop stepping with his left foot so long it is 2nd nature. To switch and do it with his right he has to actually think about the movement. Given time he can get use to the movement, but not sure if that is a good idea. Or if we should just leave him on the Left.

I have been defending Bulaga because he is getting grilled WAY too early for his performance.

Bulaga was a good back up at LT when he came in the previous week for Clifton. It is clear that there is a difference in playing left side/right side. You don't really ever see a guy completely switching to a different side of the offensive line.

There were two sacks given up, most likely put on Bulaga yesterday. However, those two times were 100% Aaron Rodgers fault. He tried to scramble around too early and in both instances he scrambled into Bulaga's block, allowing the d-lineman to make an easy tackle.

I played left tackle (obviously not at any level of Bulaga). However, playing line, especially with the pass block can basically be compared to muscle memory. If I were bumped to right tackle, my first step would most likely be slower and shorter than if I were playing my normal position. When you are constantly practicing that first left foot stepping back it becomes 2nd nature. To go to the right side and have to do the opposite would be a pure pain in the ass....in professional football, D1, 2, or 3 football, and even high school.

He's playing a position that (to my knowledge) he has never played.

He gave up 2 sacks. One of which he had Wake blocked well, but when Rodgers tried to escape the pocket underneath of him, Wake got off the block and tripped him up.

It's only is 2nd start to a position he has never played. No need to panic.

Bulaga has two starts. Colledge has over 50. I think people need to slow down with their worries.

Furthermore, the five sacks is a bit misleading. I would say at least two (probably three) were on Rodgers. He bails out of the pocket way too early. I have no idea why. Well, I know he doesn't have confidence in his line, so he has happy feet because of that, but a couple of those were just ridiculous. Honestly, I thought one of those plays was a designed run.

Rodgers needs better pocket presence. Yes, the pass protection is to blame for Rodgers' lack of confidence in them, but they aren't to blame all the time.

All in all, I'm happy Bulaga is matching up with Ray Edwards next week and not Allen Babre or Daryn Colledge. I think that's the best way to put it.

I've never chipped a tooth but I've bit my tongue while getting slammed down and have had 2 concussions. I can tell you first hand that those experiences are memorable. Not in a good way.

As for Bulaga, someone mentioned sides. MM said years ago that he thinks in terms of sides (left side vs right side) over Tackle vs Guard. I wish he kept with that original plan.

Mike McCarthy is SURELY wrong on that account Zombie. You can put the leagues best left tackle on the right side and they will be inconsistent.

That is terrible.

When it comes to offensive line McCarthy changes his philosophies every year and several times during the year.

All I need to say about Bulaga is that it could have been worse. Two of the sacks were Rodgers fault when he decided to try and run by Bulaga's blocks. Not saying Bulaga didn't miss some bad reads, but there are also some that Rodgers didn't help himself either. There was one play in particular where a player came off the end free on Bulaga's side and everyone was ripping him. Looking at that play Bulaga actually made the right read, you always protect inside out because that's the shortest path to the QB. Rodgers should have seen the uneven line and known if someone was coming off the end they would be free. Should have been a hot route or thrown away. I still contend that Rodgers was not 100% healthy yesterday from the concussion and decision making was less than par for him.

Bulaga was not to bad like others stated in this thread he hasn't played RT before it is hard to transition there.Hell he went from LT to LG to LT to LG to RT give this guy a break. If he keeps playing there he will improve the more reps he gets there plus remember guys he is a rook coming off the bench and starting. He is clearly suited for LT and if clifton gets injured he will surely take his place and lang will play RT.

Is it really THAT hard to step back with your right foot when you are used to stepping back with your left foot? And if it is so hard to play different positions on the line, why don't teams dress 10 linemen for each game, so they will have an exact substitute at each position in case of injury?

"Greg C." wrote:

Hell yes it is hard for an offensive lineman.. but IMO, not as hard as saying going from a interior lineman to the edge.

As a lineman you have to play with balance, thus leverage, and most of the time your footwork isn't your first thought.. from your waist up is. You as a player get so entrenched in backing out of your stance one way, your drop is measured over and over to remain stout in the drop, your footwork becomes something as a second nature. Now, you turn that player around and now his is thinking about his footwork more than he ever should.. and it isn't polished and the defender can take advantage of the tiniest leverage miscue and your cooked.

Couple of notes, I thought Bulaga did an excellent job at Washington, they tested him repeatedly and he held up for a first time player respectfully.. yesterday, as soon as they seen they had the advantage with Wake.. they went hunting over an over. Part of me was amazed that they didn't shift help more there.. but part of me thought back to Washington and that he might settle down. He didn't.. now is Wake that much better than Orakpo? Did Bulaga just have a bad day? Whatever the case.. we lost yesterday on both sides at the point of attack.

Miami newspaper stated that the Fins out toughed us.. they did. Plain and simple.. they failed to recognize that half the defense of main rotation was sitting on the sidelines or that Tauscher was on the sidelines as well.. but the fact remained that Bulaga and most every other guy on the line got his ass whipped.

Cameron Wake is a stud. It's not like Bulaga was getting beat by Mike Montgomery. I blame McCarthy/Campen for not giving Bulaga some help via chip blocking from the TE or RB.

You have got to make adjustments, and sometimes I wonder if McCarthy is too proud to do so. I know this isn't on McCarthy, but it reminds me of when Bob Sanders refused to give Harris support when guarding Plaxico in the NFC Championship.
