Just an FYI, Mike McCarthy did try to put them away. Rodgers threw a deep bomb to put the score at 35-23, but it was poorly underthrown and picked off. Had Rodgers had more on the ball and completed it, we would be saying "nice call, Mike McCarthy" and wouldn't be having this discussion right now.

I said stupid call to my dad while the ball was in the air. I firmly hated it and would've either way just because of the way the game was going. They needed a long drive to give their defense a rest.

There is a time to go after it and then there is a time to put together a put away drive. That time called for the latter.

It's only stupid when it doesn't work.

Yes, would have been nice to put a long drive that would have given our D a much needed rest. I'm not trying to defend Mike McCarthy here. I'm just trying to understand what Mike McCarthy was thinking at the time.

I'm under the impression that Mike McCarthy thought he could catch the Lions with their pants down.

McCarthy is going to turn into Marty Schottenheimer when he has a lead. That's just the way he is. I don't like it, but that philosophy has won a lot of games for Marty Schottenheimer and it's won a lot of games for McCarthy too. For the record, I like Marty Schottenheimer, but his teams lacked a killer instinct. The Pack couldn't put the Lions away today and nearly loss because of this.

For all the posts pointing fingers at McCarthy, at least he corrects his mistakes. The penalties were fixed today. The special teams coverage unit was passable.

However, Dom Capers has not figured out how to stop stacked WR sets. Until he does, Green Bay will have a weakness that will put them in shootouts more often than not.

Although, maybe this is just a fluke chink in the zone blitz armor. Maybe it's the players. I tend to think it's a combination of everything. But this formation is what torched Green Bay against Arizona and Pittsburgh last season.

While that was happening, the offense was scoring what 80 points combined in those games. Just sayin'

Don't get me wrong, there have been times when I've groaned at a call only to eat my words during the game. Either way, I didn't get this call.

Again, football is about situations and I don't think he handled the situation well there. I understand the logic of trying to go get it on one play. That probably takes the wind out of your opponent, but the Lions kept fighting back. There was no one play that could have put them down. Sometimes you have to play keep away and that's what GB needed to do IMO.

Personally, I think the offense will get it together sooner rather than later. They always do, but this is just a gripe I have right now.

"Coaches coach.. players play."

There comes a time when repeat mistakes and trends start to point towards coaches not coaching effectively.

I don't think we are at that point overall from the HC position.. some of his subordinates.. I have doubts.
Mike McCarthy has a passive mentality overall as a person.. he is aggressive early and turns passive when the game is on the line.. he has shown it time and time again. When pressure crowds in.. your true personality comes out in most cases.. since I don't know him on a personal level I will check down to what I see in front of my on Gameday.. a passive personality.

His staff has shown that with the up and down trends from the discipline of this football team and how players are held accountable.

But overall.. Mike McCarthy I think is a solid NFL Head Coach.. just not a particularly aggressive one when the other team is on the ropes.

I like football played where you're ALWAYS up by 2 scores. I like 35-23. I don't like 28-23.

I understand where you're coming from. Seriously. I do.

In this case though, I'll defend MM's call. He thought he could catch them playing short pass. He was wrong. He was going for the kill.

There's beauty in the 2 score rule. It causes desperation in opponents. Yes, the Lions kept bouncing back. But if we kept a 2 score lead, the clock will eventually run out on them.

Plus, desperation makes people stupid. We got a Hall of Famer and two perennial Pro Bowlers back there in the D that were due for something big. Keep them desperate.

Oddly, I agree with both of you. Like Porky, my thought was "We needed to grind some clock out, get the defense a rest and impose some will on them, not try to get it all in one flashy play." But Zombie's right that had the pass been completed people would have called it a brilliant play.

But really, they needed to grind some clock out, get the defense a rest and impose some will on the Lions at that point. I don't know if that play was what McCarthy wanted or something Rodgers switched to, but IMO it wasn't the right situational call.

The one thing that has consistently bugged me about McCarthy is the killer instinct. I like a lot about the guy, but the killer instinct is a dagger.

I agree. I like MM. But he has a tragic flaw.

I wouldn't want to fight zombies with MM. He's the type of guy who won't shoot the zombie in the head to make sure it's dead when it's on the ground. That will eventually lead to someone being bitten by one that's only looked finished.

packerfanoutwest (34m) : Feliz Navidad!
Zero2Cool (5h) : Merry Christmas!
beast (13h) : Merry Christmas πŸŽ„πŸŽ
beast (21h) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23-Dec) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (23-Dec) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (23-Dec) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
