What do you guys think of the NFL having a lottery for draft picks?

They have some arrangement in the NBA, which I find actually interesting.

I would say only go the first round and let the remaining rounds go on poorest record first.

I think the system works the way it is now, with divisional games ending the season to avoid playing for draft position.

I find the lottery an interesting topic because the fact thats a team that had the worst record may have had a much more difficult schedule than teams that lost 1 less game, or if teams played against resting playoff teams that may have accumulated wins without wanting to. So I think it could be an interesting thought.

I guess I'm stupid, I don't see your point. Divisional game or not, if you are trying to get the best draft selection, why does it matter? I mean, if you're in the running for a high pick, you're probably not likely to win the division anyhow, so ... why would that matter?

Well until they fix the rookie pay scale, franchises might be putting less balls in the hopper. ;)

Seriously though, I would be opposed against it, the point of the order now is to promote an opportunity for the weak sisters to get better... improving the leagues competitive balance.

Currently it is a bit of a curse, but once they get the rookie scale in place, those first 5 picks will become valuable again in trade appeal, and give the downtrodden franchise more tools and options to improve their clubs.

I vote no.

I agree with the rookie wage scale will bring back trading in the top 5 and make it a little more exciting. Let the weaker sisters as you call them actually be able to use that high pick to trade away for a stable of picks to actually rebuild a team. That in iteself I agree could bring back a better semblance of competitive balance in the draft. Right now it is really a curse to get the #1 because most teams with those high picks need way more than just that 1st rounder to get back to competitive.

Yeah, it is a curse. How many teams are screwed financially because of a top draft pick being a bust? The rookie salary cap would help alleviate that, but there's no denying that the Lions weren't screwed with their top 10 busts. Yes, it is their fault for tanking the picks and not trading down.

I think a lottery of the bottom five or so teams would be somewhat interesting, even with a rookie limit on salary. Plus, it's another opportunity for the NFL to make money, because obviously they are hurting for cash if you listen to the players union and the owners.

Seriously, I think the concept is neat, but I don't know how to properly incorporate it. Teams will and can still tank a season (e.g. Spurs) to get the overall number one pick, or increase their chances of it.

Imagine this, if we were in the running for a top 5 picks (our record being something like 4-11), and we play the Vikings in the final week of the season, would you not want to win? Would you throw the game away?

I mean the last two games of the season have meaning, even if you're out of the playoff running. You're not just gonna lay down and take in the ass against a division rival.

I still don't understand how this is a problem. That means, teams will still be fighting it out til week 17. How is this bad?

The lottery is a weighted lottery. If three teams have identical records, they'd have the same weight balls. That's just an example.

beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
