I don't hate Hawk or anything but I think one thing our defense is missing is an enforcer type linebacker in the middle. Someone who will blow people up at the line and make plays, not just a couple guys who are "solid" and "don't screw up". I understand that type of player is very hard to find but it's what I want.

We have that guy, his name is Nick Barnett :thumbright:

Good luck with that. Barnett is a ILB version of Darren Sharper.
Anyway, I agree with Stevetarded, but at the same time, I'm old school. First you have to have consistency. Then you can worry about being flashy.

I'm with Coltonja. Nick Barnett had 100+ tackles and 4 sacks last year. This year he'll once again be over 100 tackles. The year after that, he'll have over 100 tackles.

What more do you want? Nick Barnett and Ryan Grant are probably our two most underappreciated players.

Heh. I had to look him up. By the way, only 2 Packers are making less money than he is - Brad Jones and Brett Swain. Our LS is Brett Goode.

Well, I guess I've found something I don't agree with you on, zombie.

IMO Barnett is one of our most over-rated players.

Yes, he has a lot of tackles, but do not most teams have an ILB with about 100 tackles? And an awful lot of those tackles come 5-7 yards past the line of scrimmage. When a lot of plays run through the middle, an ILB is going to have a lot of tackle chances.

And he takes bad angles way too often for someone with his experience.

If he hadn't had the benefit of Ryan Pickett (and now Raji) in front of him, I'm betting he'd be well below average.

It's odd. I used to argue that he was at least as good as Urlacher (who, IMO, is still one of the most overrated ILBs in recent memory). But something happened -- I don't know if it was the off field stuff with the bar, injury problems, scheme change, whatever -- but Barnett just doesn't impress me anymore. He's just a guy who has a couple plays a game where he can do his samurai dance.

Better than the alternatives currently available? Doubtless. Better than all Packer LBs not named Clay Matthews. That, too, though sometimes I wonder if Chillar would be an improvement.

But good in some absolute sense of "what we should want from an ILB?" No.

NFL.com shows (even thought tackles aren't a stat) 12 ILB had over 100 tackles from 11 different teams and Barnett was one of them. That was for '09.

24 ILB/MLB had 100 tackles last year and 6 others had at least 90.

ER....I'm confused as to where you are looking, Kevin.

I looked here: nfl.com tackles page

By my count, in 2009 regular season, Barnett ranked 17th among NFL ILB/MLB in unassisted tackles (which, I think, is what the "total" column represents). And 21st in total of tackles and assists (the "comb" column).

I'm not sure this is evidence for anything beyond a claim that Barnett is, well, about average for inside backers.

More ILB/MLB stats for you: (all from the same place at NFL.com)

Barnett
17th in "total" with 82
21st in "comb" with 105

#32 in "total": Bart Scott, AJ Hawk, and Andra Davis, each with 60.
#32 in "comb": , Hunter Hillemeyer with 90
