Interesting thread as always, CaliforniaCheez, though (like I suggested last year) this is better placed in the NFL section. 😉

every year, at week 2. a team goes 2-0 or 0-2, a guy has a good game/bad game and people start making end-of-the-year predictions. i mean, sure you can read into some things to an extent, but sometimes it's just hyperbole in the face of "Football season is here!" excitement. which is cool an' all, i just find it funny.

unlike you, apparently, with your disingenuous use of "lolz" at the end of your post (unless you're a tad 'off' if you get my drift, and laugh at things you say which aren't funny after you say them). 😉

Yeah I skipped last week's posting and was going to bypass this week too but I figure since Cal is going to all the trouble to post this for us I should take a look at it.

Thanks for the effort Cal.

Well, I like seeing this even if it's only week 2. Same thing with Michael Silver's 32 questions. He started after week 1. Do we really know who the best team in the NFL is after week 1? Still, fun to read. Take it with a grain of salt until about week 8 or 9.

Please do not misunderstand.
I like knowing exactly who is where because of the tiebreakers. There are no ties.
No website does this so I do it for myself.
I provide it here as a service to anyone who might be interested.
I keep cumulative data every week so it is handy. You can't start this week 10 and hope to be accurate.

Some things to stimulate conversation might be:

1) If the Bears were in another division the Packers would be number one seed in the NFC. The Bears have a better division record until Monday.
Of the undefeated teams in the NFC the packers have the highest Strength of Victory and Strength of Schedule.

2) Another point of posting this is to see the "big games" for position next week. They are the Packers at Bears, Falcons at Saints, Steelers at Tampa Bay, and Jets at Dolphins.

3) Keeping in touch with reality is better than seeing the vikings and cowboys still up on somebody's power rankings.

I'm hoping for the Packers to be the only undefeated team in the NFC next week.

Nobody question why some team that is 2-0 in the conference is ahead of a 1-0 team. The answer is that the tiebreaker is winning percentage.

Later on I can post the top of the draft order for the next draft using non-playoff teams. That has only two factors. Winning % and Strength of Schedule.

For example right now the top pick of next year's draft goes to the Rams. SF, CAR, Dal, DET are tied for second, MN, BUF, CLE, are tied for 7th.

And sorry Nonstop. This does belong right here. Not in the NFL section. It is food for thought, informative, and allows me on one quick glance to take a look at the Packers season. After all this year will end up in Dallas in a final game against the AFC Champions.

GREAT THREAD TO FOLLOW.

There is a chance.
The Packers would be #1 in the NFC right now if the Bears did not have a division win or the Bears were in another division. Head to head the Packers beat #1 Tampa Bay. Their records are tied, their conference record is tied, the Packers have a higher strength of victory, higher strength of schedule, and higher net points than Tampa Bay. But the Packers are behind the Bears.

I don't do future predictions because there are too many variables.
I track the information and at a point in time, like right after the weekend's games I can tell you what is there at the moment.

What I was pointing out is that by looking at thes standing you can which games are larger than the others.

For example when #11 vikings host the #12 Lions it doesn't matter so much as the #7 Falcons at #6 Saints or the #2 Bears hosting the #5 Packers.

I understand the concept of "strength of schedule" on an intuitive level, and i'm sure the formula is very simple (winning percentage of opponents, most likely), but may I ask where you found the actual definition of the term as enunciated by the NFL itself?

You are correct. CaliforniaCheez already explained this in detail.

Based on the order of tiebreakers, Finley, what would make you think the Packers should be on top?
