Are we going to have Nance coming in for 3rd downs, presumably, or is he going to be contending with Jackson for a starting position?

From what I understand, he is a receiving threat, which reminds me of Tony Fisher. Fisher was always nice to throw on the field during 3rd down along with Ahman Green, which meant that we had dual threats. I would be most comfortable having Nance and Jackson both in the backfield on third down, instead of Nance alone, so we could at least keep the defense guessing some.

I don't see him as serious competition for the starting job. Whether or not he becomes our 3rd down back probably depends entirely on how well he can pick up the blitz.

Most likely, he'll be neither. He'll just be Brandon's backup.

Does this mean that you assume that Jackson will be a fulltime RB? If this is the case, do you think that we will make Kuhn more active? He has shown that he can run the ball very well for a fullback and can fill in as an "emergency back."

I think if Nance shows anything at all in practice he'll be our #2 halfback as soon as he can learn the playbook. Kuhn is a better fullback, IMO (although he is effective when defenses aren't expecting him to get the ball).

IMO, this is how i see it.

1. Jackson
2. Kuhn
3. Nance

Jackson and Kuhn will share a bit, Jackson will get more carries. Either of these guys will be used on 3rd down, Jackson is a very good 3rd down back and receiving threat, but Kuhn is a great blocker can catch a little too. Nance is the emergency RB and i wouldn't be surprised if he isn't even active the first couple weeks.

I think we will use Kuhn a lot to keep Jackson fresh, and keep him in there on 3rd downs, because he is clearly the best 3rd down back on the roster.

I agree with all of that. This is going to be a big opportunity for Quinn Johnson to see action.

I agree with earthquake too. peteralan71 suggested having Jackson and Nance in the backfield together, but I don't see that happening, considering how important our fullbacks are to the offense.

I don't think that McCarthy has ever used a formation like that before. I can recall a couple of runs in goalline and very short yardage situations where he had a RB at the FB position, but nothing like split backs or anything. And I highly doubt he's going to create a new formation to get a 3rd string RB on the field.

ya jackson is totally psyched as you can tell from his interview - I thought he was really good a couple years ago. So hopefully he gets back to that.

Im more worried about our Dline at this point then our RB situation.
Jackson and kuhn or 2 solid guys ...
just get danny woodhead and we are set šŸ˜‰
