I have no idea how that's not a catch. That would be considered a catch in every other game of football I've seen or played in.

I thought the ground cannot cause a fumble after possession has been maintained. I thought he also made a footballing move, But I'm a Brit so what do I know.

If the game had been in Detroit the TD would have stood simple.

"second move"

Goddamn legalism.

The question remains unanswered: How long must one maintain possession of the ball? What is the point of demarcation after which one can relinquish control of the ball?

So basically, the lesson we are to take away from this play is that if Johnson had simply not touched the ground with the ball, had he not performed the action of what looked to me like spiking the ball, this play would have counted? At what point was the play deemed to have ended, considering he brought his feet and legs in contact with the ground?

The action Johnson made was nothing of the sort of spiking the ball. The ball clearly was knocked out of his hand by the ground as his hand/arm swung south into the ground.

The rule is silly and is exactly what could be considered wrong with the NFL. This is supposed to be football, it shouldn't be overcomplicated with moronic rules like this. Things need to be more clear, but when you are talking about catching, possession, etc unfortunately that's going to have some judgment in the matter. I still think you can tell if the ball is being bobbled or not and with that, having two feet or knee or butt touching the ground while you are not bobbling the ball should constitute a catch.

I "understand" why it wasn't ruled a catch, I just have a partial disagreement with it.

I'd agree with the ruling if he was bobbling the ball, or didn't have two feet inbounds.

Hate that rule. I get that it's the rule, and I buy that it was correctly enforced. But it's a stupid rule, especially when you consider that if they start out with possession outside the endzone all they have to do is cross the plane of the goal line w/ the ball. Two completely different standards. Dumb.

Worst thing was, it absolutely cost the Lions that game. I'm no Lions fan, but shit - they did what they had to do to win that game, but for a stupid rule.

Also, I thought Stafford looked pretty decent out there - the Lions were easily outplaying the Bears before he went out.

I may be the only person who LIKES the "going to the ground" rule in the NFL. Why do I like it? Its black and white. Either you maintain control of the ball all the way, or you don't. What I don't like....judgement calls. Theres no judgement here. Its either one way or the other.

"IronMan" wrote:

What judgment was there? He caught said ball. two feet down.. his ass his the ground.. he was down and the play was dead at that moment.

What I hate.. is modifying a nearly perfect game with this nonsense.

It is a bullshit call.. upholding a bullshit rule.

I also think the rule is okay, and for the same reason: It's easier to enforce.

Although Zero doesn't like the rule, props to him for pointing out that Johnson did not drop the ball on purpose. It was jarred loose when he hit the ground.

With this rule, I don't think there is a question of how long the player has to hang onto the ball after he hits the ground. The point is whether the ball was dislodged by the impact of the receiver hitting the ground, which it clearly was in this case.

Players know that they need to hang onto the ball when they hit the ground. Johnson had it jarred loose when he came down and then tried to make it look like he dropped it on purpose. I can't fault him for that, because that's the only thing he could do at that point.

I grudgingly accepted this ruling when it happened to Greg Jennings last year, so I'm not going to complain about it when it's just the Lions. They're cursed anyway.

Like Greg said, they are cursed.

Zero2Cool (9h) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (9h) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (11h) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (12h) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (13h) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (13h) : Thank you
wpr (13h) : Z, glad you are feeling better.

Zero2Cool (13h) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (13h) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (13h) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (14h) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (14h) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (14h) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (14h) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (14h) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
