Can anyone help me understand why the love for Zook? Our special teams still suck!

- No good punt returns
- No good kickoff returns
- Our punting is erratic
- No trick plays so far

If you watch our coverage units it seems the assignment is "run towards the endzone, it's always a touchback after all", then a guy decides to take it out of the EZ and our players look back like saying "hey what's that? he is running with the ball!".

The punt coverage has been good and our punting has been bad, can this be by design? Mashtay seems to be kicking the ball soft to allow coverage to quickly end the play. This leads to poor punting distance without effective return. If that is what we are doing then I don't like it, we are losing yards on every punt just to avoid a potential play that will make Zook look bad.

So far Zook is running a vanilla version of STs and it was just a disaster waiting to happen.

I don't like Zook, show me wrong.

I don't mind vanilla STs. As long as we don't do stupid things (Gunter)

No trick plays might be a good thing... after all some of the teams that have tried them... have seen them blow up in their faces.

You right no, super great returns, but Hyde isn't Devin Hester either... I've still wondered and thought Janis should get some looks at kick off returner and he did as a rookie in training camp and I loved the potential he showed. Also Abby looked fine in his one try there, and they haven't used him since even though I think on the depth chart he's higher than Hyde for KO returner (which just proves the depth chart is 100% right). I think they just trust Hyde's ball skills more, like he picked up a ball off a one hop bouncer when the announcers seemed worried that a returner might need two hops to handle it and Hyde got it just fine.

Honestly I've been surprised that we haven't seen a huge hole at gunner with Bush and Richardson gone... I remember for years they were attempting to find anyone that could be a decent gunner to go along with Bush and all of sudden they seemed to fill those holes pretty quickly.

Also a bit surprised they kicked out the other punter so fast from training camp, but he didn't seem to be able to hold for Crosby.

I'm not saying that STs are good or that Zook is good... but I'm surprised we haven't had more to complain about... which I guess is a backhanded compliment. Again not saying he's good... but I think offense and defense problems have taken the spotlight off of STs.

I don't have much confidence in any of the Packers coaches, frankly. Maybe one or two.

Not being bad is not being good, it seems Zook is just trying to keep the Special Teams out of the Radar and I think that I can forgive some mistakes as long as we produce some important plays from time to time. We haven't done anything special and we just gave a 104 yard return in a league where most kicks are touchbacks. So I think I have a reason to have Zook in the minus column at this point in the season.
