I just don't get the "Ted Thompson's not Dan Snyder, hurrah" argument. Those are not the only two options, folks.

MOST teams in the NFL do not follow Snyder's approach. Most teams in the NFL do not follow Thompson's approach either.

When it comes to building a football team, Snyder has proven himself a moron. But there are 30 other owners/GMs in the league. Are they all idiots because they don't take Thompson's approach?

If you want to argue that Thompson's approach is the best one, that's fine. But, please, don't use the Snyder comparison as your evidence. Explain why his approach is better than Belichek's or Newsome's or whoever.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

That is the only point I tried to make in this thread.. the writer is locking it down as Thompson is opposed to signing others cast offs or making trades pre and post cutdowns..

I say don't believe Thompson is.. but if the writers thoughts align with Thompson's this season.. then it is an error.

We have a couple things that could be improved.. and if he isn't using all the facets available and the author is projecting.. then that is a mistake.

The Packers don't do unrestricted free agency, trades and waivers. If truth be told, they really don't seem to have much interest in anyone who's been under contract with another NFL team.

Not counting Harris and Jenkins as they were from another GM. But I think S Atari Bigby, TE Donald Lee, DE/NT Ryan Pickett, CB Tramon Williams, CB Charles Woodson, LB Brandon Chillar, LS Brett Goode, S Derrick Martin, CB Josh Bell, TE Tom Crabtree, P Tim Masthay, G Nick McDonald, S Charlie Peprah, CB Sam Shields, LB Frank Zombo and Ryan Grant are a pretty good group of non Packers draft picks and most of them were on another team first other than McDonald, Shields and Zombo... I'm not sure weather Goode was or wasn't...

I put together the two spreadsheets yesterday.. from last season that countered that most returners are starters.. lol. Go fish.

Now.. most returners, dynamic ones anyway, have great open field skills.. so of course the coaches try to get the ball in their hands.. that is good coaching.

It is okay.. I have my thoughts upon whom should be the returners and you have yours.. I agree that you play all out to win.. but neither Jennings (whom hasn't fielded a punt in the NFL) nor Williams have shown exceptional returning skills.. so does the risk outweigh the reward?

If Williams gets hurt and all the CB bump up a notch on the playing scale.. your okay with that? Or if Jennings goes down and our best deep threat is sitting on the sidelines.. that will be acceptable? Probably not.. because we failed to fill the returner spot..

To be clear.. I can less if we signed Smith or not.. it is more that there has to be another street free agent out there with equal skills to Williams or Jennings without the additional risk.

You can't just add a player though. You have to remove one as well.

In your spreadsheets or lists, or what not, how many of the good returners have no role other than returning?

If Tramon goes down, we'll end up using an extra linebacker if the man behind him can't hold up. Is that great? No, but you make it sound like we have so many better options on the roster or available.

Greg Jennings has returned punts in the NFL, a whopping FIVE times for a blistering less than 6 yard average.

You said it yourself, open field skills. Who has better open field skills than Greg Jennings on our team?

Obviously I would much rather we have someone other than Greg or Tramon returning, if they were a better option to be had. The NFL isn't littered with men who can return well enough to merit a spot on a roster.

We can only activate 45 of the 53 so you have to choose from that 45, or elect to deactivate someone and shorten up a position.

Tramon is very fast and has good open field skills too.

Brandon is fairly well in the open field too but lacks top end speed to go the distance.

In trying to answer my question, I thought Brett Swain, or Pat Lee, but I don't think either of them will be activated often.

I'd prefer Tramon returning punts than Greg, because if Greg bursts open for 40 yards, he might be winded on the next play which would render him a decoy and removes himself as an option. Not the biggest concern, but a thought nonetheless.

Are you implying that Wes Welker has better lungs than His Holiness Gregorious Jennings? :physassult: :xcensoredx: :wickedfart:

Welker returned over 200 punts in his career including being the punt returner for the Pats, and leading the NFL in receptions last year. Returning punts doesn't seem to wind Welker much.

Ahh.. and here I thought I could suit up 70... really there are gameday inactives.. ::roll:

You make it sound like it isn't possible to carry a specialist as a returner.. many teams do. Oh.. and we can carry a LS but my god, forget about carrying a returner first, special teamer second, and some emergency positional help.. lol.

Okay.. lets play that game.. here is a list of what I would consider locks to be on the actives list.... this is 41..

# Name Pos. Act or Inact
63	Wells, Scott C A
37	Shields, Sam CB A
38	Williams, T. CB A
21	Woodson, C. CB A
91	Harrell, J.	DE A
77	Jenkins, C.	DE A
96	Neal, Mike DE A
79	Pickett, Ryan DE/NT A
35	Hall, Korey FB A
73	Colledge, D. G A
71	Sitton, Josh G A
2	Crosby, Mason K A
56	Barnett, Nick LB A
55	Bishop, D. LB A
54	Chillar, B. LB A
50	Hawk, A.J. LB A
59	Jones, Brad LB A
52	Matthews, C. LB A
51	Poppinga, B. LB A
61	Goode, Brett LS A
90	Raji, B.J. NT A
8	Masthay, Tim P A
10	Flynn, Matt QB A
12	Rodgers, Aaron QB A
25	Grant, Ryan RB A
32	Jackson, B.	RB A
30	Kuhn, John RB A
42	Burnett, M.	S A
36	Collins, Nick S A
29	Martin, D.	S A
26	Peprah, C. S A
76	Clifton, Chad T A
65	Tauscher, Mark T A
75	Bulaga, Bryan T/G A
70	Lang, T.J. T/G A
88	Finley, J.	TE A
86	Lee, Donald TE A
80	Driver, Donald WR A
85	Jennings, Greg WR A
89	Jones, James WR A
87	Nelson, Jordy WR A

Here are the possible candidates for the final 4 actives.. Lets mark at least one more corner, another TE and lets say a Spitz or another corner.. that leaves one spot.

You don't think we could somehow squeeze in a returner in one of their places without much issue.. I guess I don't see that as a huge issue.. letting one of the 45 be a primary returner and maybe lets say an emergency RB.

72	Spitz, Jason C/G
24	Bush, Jarrett CB
22	Lee, Pat CB
33	Underwood, B. CB
98	Wilson, C.J. DE
45	Johnson, Quinn FB
67	McDonald, Nick G
74	Newhouse, M. G/T
58	Zombo, Frank LB
83	Crabtree, Tom TE
81	Quarless, Andrew TE
16	Swain, Brett WR

Yes, Wood was leftovers too. I remember a Raiders fan of mine telling me that he's washed up and won't make it through the first season. I remind him about that every time I see him.

Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
