Plus you combine that with one of the top 5-7

"RedSoxExcel" wrote:

This really is the key: i.e. is Favre a top 5 QB anymore? If he plays like he did last year, the answer is a resounding yes, but last year was the exception (based on his history), not the rule. It was his best season ever and expecting a repeat at 40-41 years old, is a huge leap IMO.

"TOPackerFan" wrote:

Even with age and everything, you don't think Favre is a top 5-7 QB in the league right now? Who do you rank ahead of him?

Wasn't putting up his best numbers at 40 a huge leap too last year?

"RedSoxExcel" wrote:

That's kind of my point. It was a huge leap last year, and it's an even bigger one this year. if he plays like he did last year, maybe Brees, Brady and Maning ahead of him. If he plays like NYJ Favre, those four guys, Rodgers, Rivers, big Ben, Cutler, Matt Ryan are all better than Lord Favre.

WARNING: We are are WAY too overconfident about the Vikings demise.

Someone can jump on me about being a Favre lover or whatever but I do not understand why people think the Vikings are not going to score a ton.

At the end of the day, they still have Adrian F'n Peterson. You can make fun of his fumbles or whatever, at the end of the day, he's still one of the top THREE b's in the whole league. Plus you combine that with one of the top 5-7 QB's in the league, you have a pretty potent offense.

What is the difference between the beginning of last season and this season? Did everyone expect Sidney Rice to blow up like that? No, so what makes you think this year someone like Harvin or Berrian or Shanicoe or Camarillo or whatever might not do the same.

As much as everyone hates Favre, he makes receivers play well (e.g., Rice and Shanicoe last year). Irregardless of Favre, they have AP! He's hard to stop if he's on.

They won the division two years ago with basically no WRs and no QB!

Quick, someone go nuts because I see the division objectively!

We? Speak for yourself, not me, thank you sir. I've said a few times, I don't think they will match their magical season of '09, but that I don't see them falling to the depths of the Lions either. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win anywhere between 8 to 10 games this season. If I had to guess, I'd say they go 8 - 8 or 9 - 7.

Sure, they have Adrian Peterson, and with Tavaris Jackson at the helm, they went 10-6 and made the playoffs, only to be resoundingly spanked by the Eagles in the first round.

Of course, it wasn't really Jackson but Gus Frerotte who deserves most of the credit for getting them to the postseason that year.

Look at his career trends. He is far more likely to regress after a good year than to repeat his performance two seasons in a row. If I were a betting man, there's no way I'd be putting my money on Favre to repeat this year, especially since he's already whining about his ankle. If he does repeat, great -- it will be a pleasant surprise. But I sure am not risking any money on it.

For the life of me, though, I cannot figure out why he is advertising the problems with his ankle. If he's hoping that talking up his vulnerability will prompt NFL officials to go easy on him, that might work. But I doubt it will provoke defensive coordinators to take pity on him and dial back the pressure (and if it does, shame on them and they need to be fired). Other than a few concessions from officials, I don't see what he has to gain from this tactic.

There is an easy explanation for that. He's an idiot, he talks too much.

Maybe the difference between Woodson and Favre is that the CB position is so different than the QB position. CBs have to rely a lot more on speed than the QB, and speed is one of the first things to go with age. I've wondered the same thing about Woodson many times and even posted here about it, I wouldn't be surprised if any one of these years suddenly Woodson dropped off, I thought it was going to happen last year but I was dead wrong. Its happened to CBs just as good as Woodson.

So, I see a big difference between the age issue between Woodson and Favre

"longtimefan" wrote:

Yeah I UNDERSTAND that...

Woody just won the DMVP So dont sit there and say his speed is gone after 9 months..

Woody isnt almost 41 and had a surgeon inside his ankle

And we are now hearing about how the ankle is being shot up..

So go ahead and think that Woodson's health is more of an issue than Bretts

Perhaps. I lean toward the theory that he has a childish inability to keep his mouth shut and simply says whatever pops into his head.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. I think we are going to see more pro-Favre flags thrown than ever before and also more attempts to test the limits by opposing defensive coordinators and players than ever before.

Why is Favre telling it like it is (which is subject to change from moment to moment)? That's what he does. It's his blessing, his curse. At 9:15 he tells you how he feels. Maybe at 9:23 he tells you something contradictory. A lot can happen in eight minutes.

Point being, Favre wears his heart on his sleeves and holds almost nothing back. I don't think there's a tactic behind it. Put a mic in his face and you'll get some folksy blah blah. Its why I worshipped him in Green Bay and almost can't stand him in Minnie (that's neither here nor there).
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Evad expressed what I was trying to say better than I could. Favre has built a career around expressing his feelings from moment to moment. Whether it's a calculated tactic or a true expression of his personality, we don't know. There have been plenty of instances in which it has gained him adulation (though I found it annoying when he was in Green Bay too), but I don't see how it helps him this year.

You're possibly being overly-objective - to the point that you're being subjective.

AP is a special talent, but the Packers have kept him in check for the past couple seasons, and he's not the guy that made the difference in those two games last season. That was Favre, and there's no doubt he's hobbled for the moment with that ankle - combined with the very real issues along their o-line, that makes a huge difference. As for Rice, he wasn't just some scrub that Favre magically transformed into a good receiver - he's a good WR, and represents a pair of cleats that Walker's just not going to fill.

Meanwhile, the two biggest concerns (and likely culprits) in the two losses last year to the Vikes, o-line and secondary, are better at this point. Are they appreciably better? No way to tell until things start to count, but they certainly ought to be.

No question about it: They won both contests last year, and the Packers can't claim to be better until they prove it on the field. If you want to be the best you have to beat the best. In my book, there's no reason to believe strongly in either direction - both teams have strengths and weaknesses, and until they line up and butt heads I don't think you can really say who's best.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
