I suppose I just don't see how anyone can defend his play last week, even when he admits it was awful and said missing practice was no excuse.

I don't see how it's a Thompson thing... Thompson's 1st picks haven't been great (other than Rodgers)... Wolf's 1st round picks weren't ether... yet some see him as the man to copy GMing from...

It more like up for 36 hours watching his wife and new born before going on the plane... of course he for rested but I don't he was mentally thinking about a preseason game... or physical totally rested...

I'm not sure about other but I doubt I'd game about a preseason game if I just had a kid through emergency Caesarean section and had to be in intensive care.

They want Harrell to make the team, not because its the best thing for the Packers, but because it would be the best thing for Ted Thompson's reputaion.

I really don't care one way or the other. I want the best 53. If Justin Harrell is one of the best 53, then I want him on the team.

That doesn't make sense either. Not saying you're wrong. I am a Packers fan, I don't give two hairs off Shermans crotch if Pee Wee Herman picked the guy up or if Ted Thompson did.

I'm not sure why who selected the player matters at all. Free Agent, Draft, Trade, whichever, however, just field the best 53 possible.

This is a tangent...I've said what I want to say about Harrell and Shawn listened and all is cool....

But I have a question for you, Kevin.

Why shouldn't we compare a football player to people with "everyday jobs"? I mean, it's not like the football player does things that impact basic health (e.g garbagemen, plumbers, nurses, the occasional doctor), or keeps the universe from imploding (SETI watchers, Area 51 security guards).

Is it just because he makes a shitload of money that says he has different obligations re: job v. family, job v. society, job v. whatever?

Now, I realize that rich people sometimes look at the world differently because they're rich. But should they? And should we accept it if they do?

Just curious.

p.s. I expect that compared to me, you and many others on this board are quite a bit more affluent than I am.

Rich bastards.

I think he meant that athletes are just in a different realm than the "rest" of us. It's not a question of whether or not they should be or not, just the way it is in our society. They're just held to a different standard. We can compare them to 'regular' jobs all we would like, but the fact is they are playing a whole new ball game, no pun intended. Unfortunately, they get to play by a different set of rules than most of us.

Oh to conclude.. speaking of putting words in ones mouth.. where did I say he should be fired because he needed a couple days off for the birth? I didn't... lol. ;)

Maybe you didn't. I was thinking you wanted him cut for his bad performance. Must have confused you with someone else. There are multi-page threads about Harrell's performance at all four forums I go to, and they all run together after they grow to multiple pages. Sorry, my bad.

Another common theme between the thread at all those forums is that the people who rewatched the game to see how bad Harrell was don't think he looked that bad for the most part, and that it's been blown out of proportion by the press. Harrell's interview didn't help, but if he started making excuses instead of saying "There's no excuse...", people would jump him for that too. Lose-lose proposition. I don't have it on DVR, so I can't say, but I know when I watched it the first time he didn't seem too be playing too badly to me.

McGinn's new article (in which he reiterates his opinion that Harrell was "awful") shed a little more light on things-

Although Harrell was awful in Seattle, Trgovac still has hopes he can make the team. According to Trgovac, Barbie Harrell had an emergency Caesarean section for delivery of the couple's first child Wednesday night and that the baby boy was in intensive care when Harrell flew with the team to Seattle.

"He slept on the plane like a baby," Trgovac said. "He had been up for a day and a half. But he has to be more consistent."

Harrell has been more successful rushing in the one on ones (6-10-3, .395) than either Wilson (5-18-3, .250) or Wynn (5-21-2, .214).

I don't see any way in which "he wasn't that bad" can be construed as a positive thing. The best thing that can be said about "he wasn't that bad" is it's about the mildest insult one can level against something. Probably the only milder insult would be "it was nice."

So what was he? Was he great? Was he good? Was he at least satisfactory? "Not that bad" doesn't cut it in my book. "Not that bad" is still bad, and I want at least satisfactory on my team.

Are you basing this on my choice of words? I wouldn't read to much into that. Like I said, I haven't rewatched the game to evaluate him. Here's a quote from someone who did- HarveyWallbangers over at packerrats.com-

I just rewatched the Seattle game, and I now think the article making Harrell sound like he had the worst game ever is ludicrous.

I watched Seattle's last drive in the 3rd quarter and first drive in the 4th quarter. Harrell played about 12 snaps. On one play he was on the ground assisting in a tackle. He wasn't knocked down. On one play he hit the ground while being blocked. It's hard to tell, but it might have even been a cut block. On the other 10 plays, Harrell was not on the ground. He assisted in one tackle, pressured the QB on one play, and mostly held the point on the others. I don't think there was a play where he was driven back--like I've seen from Raji. (Of course, he's going up against backups). On several plays, Harrell was double teamed. I think the article was mostly a hack job. Did he dominate? No. But not the awful game that the article made it out to be.

I preface it by saying I watched 12 plays. Apparently, Harrell played in 17 plays during the game. Maybe he was completelly awful in the other 5 plays.

That's very interesting stuff from the guy at packerrats.com. By the time I read the article about how awful Harrell was, I had already watched the game twice, and I hadn't noticed any problem with his performance. But I took the article at its word because Harrell agreed that he played badly, and I'm not a great one for watching the finer points of line play.

I'm pretty sure, though, that even if Harrell did go down to the ground on some plays, the ballcarrier did not run through the space where he was supposed to be.

Good point about Raji. If Harrell was being knocked back like Raji has been on some plays, we would be hearing about it.
