I don't understand all the sympathy thrown Harrell's way. The man has made over $15 million to do absolutely nothing. He's made more money than a lot of players with much longer, more productive careers. From that perspective he is one of the luckiest men in the history of mankind: he has enough money to last him the rest of his life, and he's done essentially nothing to earn it.

So what if he had a baby a few days ago? If he's that thin skinned, he needs to get out of the league.

well, if he had a baby, that explains why people thought him fat.

But I don't think it was that JH was upset...but that people shouldn't jump to conclusions just because he missed practice, because being there for childbirth is sort of expected for dads these day if it is possible.

Certainly more important than a mere football practice.

Vandermause should write for Bleacher Report. He has all the style and charisma of a semi literate fifth grader.

I don't particularly feel sorry for JH. As Rourke points out, he's had 15 million of salary that most people never get.

OTOH, I am bothered by those who confuse "he didn't justify his draft position" with "he's a fat, lazy whiny slob" or similar. Not good enough to keep around longer...okay, I can buy that argument. Not sure I agree, but it's a legitimate argument.

But he plays at a fat guy position. Maybe *the* fat guy position.

And as for "lazy" or "whiny" or similar adjectives -- I'm just not buying that fans have the standing to make such moral judgments.

Certainly, I dispute whether we have access to evidence that would justify our making such.

This has nothing to do with Harrell's reaction to Vandermause. It's simply my take on someone who is apparently just a dick reporter. Do you read the training camp blogs? He does not shut up about it. Not to mention it's just lazy journalism appealing to the bitcher and whiner fans. The article has been written 10 times before. Everyone understands the Harrell situation. Shit, why not write an article saying Rodgers should make the team. It would be stupid and lazy but at least it wouldn't make you look like an asshole.

He played extensively in the second half last night and I saw several plays where he held up the line of scrimmage pretty well. He didn't necessarily make any impact plays but definitely had a hand on several plays. Certainly worth keeping around at least for the remainder of camp, and if he holds up, likely to make the roster. Mike V. seems WAY too eager to write him off. I don't know if Harrell will make the team but I do know his mix of size and speed are not often replicated. Powerful defensive lineman are not a dime a dozen and easily replaced. And also, considering the absence of Johnny Jolly creates an opening on the defensive line, I say keep him on the roster this season and see how it pans out...

His wife went into the hospital for an emergency C-section. If it was my wife and kid, I couldn't live with myself if I wasn't there and something bad happened.

My opinion is, since cutting Harrell at this point doesn't save any money because a settlement would equal his pay. We need D linemen, he is healthy and played well last night. Cutting him now would be foolish.

Does he make the team? Yes, IF healthy. It gives him a chance to make his contract actually pay off. He said he feels like he owes it to the team.

If he is not healthy enough to play, then cut him. That is what I would expect, but it is unwise to do it before.

Do I specifically want this guy to our roster? No. But if he's healthy, he's good enough to warrant a roster spot with the depth we currenlty have in the D-line.

Dude, what does this have anything to do with what I wrote? Obviously, I have no problem with Harrell's leaving training camp for the birth of his child. My rhetorical question was in reference to people who took umbrage with Vandermause's criticizing Harrell so soon after the birth of his child. The fact he's a new father should not exempt him from criticism. He's done nothing. He's a fair target for criticism, whether or not his wife just had a baby.
