Greg, if what you say about McCarthy's motives are true, what are we to think of his constant praise of Mason Crosby? I sure hope it's not to stroke a fragile ego, because we really could use a mentally tough Crosby through this season.

I've never been comfortable with McCarthy's constant praise of Mason Crosby, nor the team's refusal to bring in a kicker to compete with Crosby in training camp. I've always thought that a kicking competition in training camp is good seasoning for the kickers. I hate all of this coddling, but apparently more teams are doing it this way now because training camp rosters are not as large.

Take Westbrook vs. Justin, as just one example.

Which is a bigger risk? Bad back or concussions?

No one would ever convince me that Westbrook isn't the superior talent, and would have the potential of being a major impact player for us.

I am NOT saying sign Westbrook---but between those two? I can pretty much guarantee that Westbrook would add to our team...

Not even remotely close.

obviously not

Damn Steve.. you have convinced me right here with this post.. ;)

Realistically.. if the coaches are satisfied.. awesome.. maybe the railbird reporters are biased or not getting the whole story...

My point or argument is based on a perspective of being a coach on the team and seeing the same thing.. if it is the obvious to the naked eye..

Exactly.. all this based on Harrell dogging it in camp.. maybe the reporters are missing it and Harrell is busting his ass in camp.. don't know as I am not part of the Packers.. but any reference to Harrell not giving it is ultimately disappointing.

With our numbers at OLB.. could one realistically argue that Thomas couldn't potentially give us more than Harrell? Even if depth is still a question at this point.

There is other people you would cut before Justin to sign Westbrook though. He is currently a 2nd string D-Line so why the F would you get rid of him to "give someone else a shot" when you have 12 WRs.

That's a heck of a list if you like players who are over the hill and/or recuperating from major injuries. I looked up a couple of the more intriguing names....

Adwale Ogunleye--broken fibula in December 2009

Greg Ellis--34 years old, production dropped sharply during the 2009 season as he suffered a series of injuries

That was enough for me. Or maybe it's just that all 32 GM's in the NFL are completely insane for not wanting these guys.

Thing is this.

It is to the point with Justin that even if he is looking "lights out" fantastic in camp, PLUS displaying maximum effort, you STILL have to make a major leap of faith to keep him on the final 53.

His back could go on any one play---all evidence to date points to this.

He has done nothing in this league, and it is the "not for long" NFL.

His "special considerations due to potential" days are over for this fan.

End of camp, pre-season, whatever.. He HAS to be looking scary good for me to want him on the 2010 version of the 53, and I will STILL consider it a calculated risk.

If he is dogging it in practice- I am not saying he is-

Gone, baby, gone.

And Harrell is returning healthy? And rocking an ready to go? And giving full effort albeit that history say that is unlikely?

Look.. I am all for this kid helping this team, I don't hold any ill will against him for a Brett pick, or his injuries or what not.

What I am holding against him is that he has been declared healthy all offseason and shows up to camp either out of shape or is giving less than full effort in the eyes of guys that are paid to watch these guys practice.

Of course you don't run at all the guys on that list... I quickly picked out names that have done it before and are available for a multitude of reasons.. realistically one or two may help this club..

Boil it all down.. I am pissed that Justin didn't come to camp ready to out work every other damn player on the roster.. for a guy that said he felt guilty that to me is unacceptable.

It doesn't speak to me of a guy that I can count on in the heat of battle of a game.. so why prolong his time on this club?

BTW.. a guy on that list that possibly would give us another option as a pass rusher from the edge.. Brock.. either he is asking for the world in salary or their is something hidden I haven't seen.

I'm disappointed to be hearing these things about Harrell too. But we are less than two weeks into camp, and I'm not yet ready to rule out the possibility that he could pick up his performance. The preseason games should tell us a lot. I'm willing to let this situation play out for a few more weeks.
