Green Bay Packers' Jordy Nelson turns heads with stellar offseason

BY KAREEM COPELAND kcopeland@greenbaypressgazette June 23, 2010

Some things just take a little time.

Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson has put together a phenomenal offseason in his third year, demanding attention with his play in organized team activity practices and minicamp.

Passes stuck to his gloves. Defenders couldnt keep up. Any ball in his vicinity seemed catchable.

As quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his bag of offensive toys prepare for what the organization hopes is a lengthy playoff run, Nelson looks ready for a bigger role.

Jordy has had, by far, his best offseason, receivers coach Jimmy Robinson said. Hes feeling so comfortable out there, that hes making a ton of plays.

Nelson has caught 55 passes for 686 yards and four touchdowns in two seasons with the team. Twenty-two of those receptions came last year as he split time with James Jones as the slot receiver.

The team prides itself on drafting and developing its own players and examples litter the roster: Aaron Rodgers, Donald Driver, Jermichael Finley, Greg Jennings, Nick Barnett. Putting Nelson in that group with proven commodities is premature after an offseason running routes in shorts and helmets, but no one denies the strides he has made.

Thing about Jordy is, when he first came in you looked at him and said this guy has all the talent to be a great receiver, Driver said. Jordy just wants an opportunity.

The good thing about it is our receiving group is so deep, (but) its hard for guys to get that opportunity.

Regardless of how much Nelson has improved, he will be in that same fight this year. The Packers ranked No. 2 in the league in points scored (28.8 points per game) and No. 6 in total offense (379.1 yards per game) in 2009 and everyones back. Driver is a Pro Bowler. Jennings was a Pro Bowl alternate. Finley broke out in the second half of last season. Running back Ryan Grant was the NFLs seventh-leading rusher (1,253 yards).

And Jones, who caught 32 passes for 440 yards and five touchdowns, has improved as well.

Its nice having those weapons, Rodgers said. Our 1-2 (receivers), I think, are as good as any in the league and our 3-4 (receivers are) probably better than any 3-4 in the league.

Nelson, however, has impressed in offseason workouts before. The same was said last year, but his receptions dropped from 33 to 22 which may have been a function of opportunity. Nelson said familiarity makes all the difference.

Its just another step, Nelson said. Another whole offseason with Aaron and just working out here. Keep progressing and keep being confident. The more routes and the more plays you get, the better you feel. Its all about confidence, seeing more defenses and just knowing things.

If you continue to be consistent on the practice field, itll turn over to the games.

Robinson added, Just being out there day after day after day and being together helps you no matter who it is.

Nelson, a second-round draft pick out of Kansas State, could join a growing list of NFL receivers that experienced a breakthrough after at least a couple years of seasoning.

Driver had just 37 catches his first three seasons and broke out with 70 receptions in Year 4. Greg Jennings posted 98 catches his first two seasons and 80 in his third season. Indianapolis Colts receiver Reggie Wayne caught 76 passes in his first two years and followed with 68 in Year 3, 77 in Year 4 and has never had fewer than 82 since. New England Patriots wideout Wes Welker had 29 catches his first two years combined, 67 in Year 3 and never fewer than 111 in the next three seasons.

Hopefully, hes in a position where hes ready to kind of emerge and really take off, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said of Nelson. The time is now as they say.

I was expecting an article like this for Jones, not Jordy, but this works just fine for me. Hopefully Jones has been improving just as well as Jordy. It's hard to imagine our receiving corps being even better than last year. Jordy and Jones improving and Finley breaking out. Should be an exciting season.

I've been waiting for Jordy to step it up... it's clear he had all the talent to do so he just hasn't taking it to the next level as of yet... he has all it takes to be a great player.

I like Jordy a lot so this article is great to hear. And the best news is that both Jones and Nelson are going to push each other to become better, when they will need to eventually become #2 and #3.

I've liked him from the beginning. I sure hope he becomes our #2 some day. Not until DD decides to retire of course. (10 years from now,)

Ditto, I like Jordy too. It would be great to see him have a breakout season. Same with Jones. Our 3 and 4 receiver sets could be awsome. I ecspecially like the part about the "passes stuck to his gloves". Hope it holds true. Dropped passes are drive killers.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?

Nice article, and I'm glad to see that Jordy is looking good. The article kind of went off into la-la land at the end though, mentioning all of those WR's who had big jumps in production at some point in their careers. Those players were all starting or in Welker's case, playing a 3rd WR role that was equivalent to starting. That's not going to happen for Jordy unless there is an injury, and maybe not even then because James Jones is about as good as he is. This offense put up huge passing numbers last year, and they could do it again this year, but there is only one ball and Jordy Nelson is no better than fourth on the list of guys it will be thrown to (Jennings, Driver, Finley).

Mucky Tundra (8h) : @AaronNagler · 2m Both Jordan Love and Malik Willis were Limited participants at Packers practice today.
Zero2Cool (10h) : Johnson didn't make it until 2020. Ring 2023. 🤷 Personally, he should have been in years prior to Hall.
Zero2Cool (10h) : HUMP DAY
beast (10h) : Guys that have a good shot at making the NFL Hall of Fame usually get into their teams pretty fast
beast (10h) : Yeah, but is Kampman and the others in the NFL Hall of Fame?
Zero2Cool (11h) : Johnson was Hall of Fame, 2020. Should haev been in Ring a year later, not three years.
Zero2Cool (11h) : I could be wrong there though
Zero2Cool (11h) : Guys like Kampman, Tim Harris, Al Harris, etc all over 15 years. Hall of Fame is 5 year wait
Zero2Cool (11h) : I guess I see players in Packers Hall come way later
beast (11h) : Yeah, usually teams hall of fames are a much lower bar than the NFL
Zero2Cool (11h) : is it uncommon for Hall before Ring?
Zero2Cool (11h) : S Xavier McKinney named first-team All-Pro by NFLPA
beast (13h) : I missed it, sorry, but he got into the NFL Hall of Fame years before that
Zero2Cool (13h) : Jones took his sweet ole time!
Zero2Cool (13h) : Yeah, he's in the ring of honor, just saw video and his name is up there
Zero2Cool (13h) : Didn't they have a thing in 2023 for Jimmy's ring of honor? I swear I saw it
beast (13h) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (13h) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (8-Jan) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
beast (8-Jan) : Cowboys denied Bears request
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : From what I'm reading, MM is under contract through the 14th of January; after that he's free game
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : McCarthy let go or not extended??
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Chicago Bears have asked the Dallas Cowboys permission to interview Mike McCarthy for head coaching vacancy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : The winners page that is
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I was not hoping for that. It messes up the page lol
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3.
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3.
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : congrats beast on 2024 !
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : congrats porky on winning 2023 pick'em! (oops sorry)
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : Packers have $60M+ of 2025 cap space on paper TODAY.
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Missed FG into a Lions TD; that'll do pig, that'll do
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : how was that not a safety? Goff throws it at an offensive lineman
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero, I thought that was a given! ;)
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero I looked through earlier and noticed the same thing. Bonkers year. I just wonder if beast put any money on games
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I'm hoping for BLOODBATH. Pummel one another.
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : 8 people in pick'em would have won any year with their total lol
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : I'm rooting for the Lions to lose.
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : God help me but I'm rooting for the Vikings to...Vikings to...Christ I can't say it
