From PFT:

CHIEFS WANT A THIRD-ROUNDER FOR GONZALEZ
Posted by Mike Florio on October 11, 2008, 10:41 p.m.

We heard last night of a report out of Kansas City linking Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Giants. We investigated the matter, and confirmed that, indeed, something is up.

Along with the Giants, the Bills, Eagles, and Packers are interested in the veteran Pro Bowler, who recently set the career receiving yardage record at his position.

The Chiefs reportedly want a third-round pick for Gonzalez. The Giants reportedly have offered a sixth-rounder.

Frankly, were shocked that King Carl has set his asking price so low. Its a sign, in our view, of a genuine desire to get the deal done before the trading period expires at 4:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday.

The fairest approach would be to use a formula that determines the pick based on the performance of Gonzalez and/or of his new team in his new city.

Gonzalezs base salary for 2008 is only $1 million. In 2009, it spikes to $4 million. In all, hes signed through 2011.

It makes sense for the Chiefs to get whatever they can for Gonzalez, who at 32 likely wont be a significant contributor to any resurgence that the Chiefs might ever enjoy. Letting him chase a Super Bowl title with a contending team would also be a nice gesture of appreciation by a franchise for whom Gonzalez has done so much over the years.

3rd rounder is it? Damn Thompson - pull that trigger!!

I wouldn't mind having him added to the Big Five. However, is it the right move for this team?

This oughtta be fun.

It'll be like the Moss thing with misinformation left and right but everyone will think they KNOW what is wanted and whats up behind the scenes, like how people still think we coulda had Moss.

We don't even seem to be using our tight ends that much anyway.

I'm sure Thompson looks into it like he looks into a lot of things, but you see that list of MULTIPLE teams? That's called a bidding war.

We need some veteran help. But not at TE. We could use some o-line or d-line help. Tony Gonzalez for a 3rd rounder is a great deal. But another TE is not going to turn us into superbowl contenders.

I still hope Ted Thompson pulls the trigger on this one.

If other teams are interested, we will get out bid.

Ah, but that's just the thing. If we had Tony Gonzalez, you can be pretty sure we would be using the tight ends more. This is intriguing, and a third rounder sounds like a reasonable thing to trade, but I'm not holding my breath. In three and a half years, Thompson has only made one deal in which he acquired a big-name player--Charles Woodson back in 2006. Also, Donald Lee is just beginning a new contract, Jermichael Finley was drafted in the third round, and Tory Humphrey is finally beginning to produce, so my money is on Thompson sticking to his plan rather than making the big deal. I wouldn't mind if it happened, though.

I say we give them a third rounder for Tony. We have two young TE's that could use his mentorship (i think i jus made a new word).

Could you imagine this...

Driver, Jones, Gonzo, Martin, Jennings ??

or

Driver, Jones, Gonzo, Jennings with Grant in the backfield??

I'm not offensive genius but I think that would cause some issues with defenses.

How about this offer trade them the Jets draft pick for gonzo its something we havent had to start with anyhows and the chiefs would take it cuz it could be all the way up to a 2nd rounder. Just a thought
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Why not just keep that pick and trade our #3 if that is what they want.. why give the Chiefs the chance to win on Brett's performance..

Pack it was just a thought because it could also be a 3rd rounder and lower then ours. But we all know Ted Thompson won't pull the trigger
