Walter Jones officially retires without fanfare
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 29, 2010 7:17 PM ET

There will be no farewell press conference for Walter Jones. The Seahawks wanted to throw one, but Jones insisted no great fanfare be made on his behalf.

(Compare that attitude to the tearful, hour-long self-congratulating spectacle of Brett Favre's goodbye two retirements ago.)

Jones' retirement became official Thursday afternoon with a simple team released statement.

We gave our due to Jones earlier Thursday and long-time Seahawks writer Clare Farnesworth has a great piece up on the team's official website. One his most famous blocks, on Mike Rucker, is three minutes into this video tribute.

The team is honoring Jones by immediately retiring his No. 71. The state of Washington has also declared Friday Walter Jones Day.

To celebrate, we encourage everyone to wrack up as many pancake blocks as possible. And then don't say a thing.

Did I just hear on ESPN radio that he had nine...1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9--- ?NINE?

holding calls in 13 SEASONS?

Shit, it seems to me I have seen Cliffy have that many in one GD game.

The last great Florida State player has retired.. unless you count Boldin as an all time great.

And with him.. the last HOF contribution from Bobby Bowden.

Sad day... Jones was a all time great.. and wish him the best in retirement.

Walter Jones is right up there with Jonathan Odgen, maybe even higher.
This is a placeholder

That is pretty amazing. That man was really, really good. One of the best ever. Easily. It's a shame that injuries slowed him down near the end of his career, because playing-wise, he'd have another 2-3 years in him.

As a Packer oldtimer, I tend to think of Forrest Gregg as the greatest tackle ever.

But if I'm being honest, I think Jones was better.

All the pretty boys and slick car salesmen get all the press. But the world runs because of people like Walter Jones.

Enjoy your retirement, big guy. And you might as well make your reservations for a Canton hotel five years from now. It'll be one of the easiest decisions the HOF electors ever make.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Kramer should be in the Hall of Fame. No doubt. But, IMO, he's not at the level of Jones (or Gregg, for that matter).

This is going to sound weird, but there are two kinds of Hall of Famers: The regular kind, and the Hall of Famer among Hall of Famers.

Most in the Hall are the first kind. Kramer is that kind. A few, a very select few, in the Hall should have a special category: Jim Brown; Don Hutson; Vince Lombardi. Jones is that kind.

No way he doesnt go in on the first ballot.

If you're one of the best 3 guards in 50 years of football, if you get selected all-pro 6 times and if, even than, people could see that you where one of the best at your position, you're a special player.

And I know that there are people who will bring this "great team" stuff up, but guard is not a position that you can look much better at, regardless of who's playing behind you. Unless it's Barry Sanders.

Thing is, he was an amazing pass protector. An amazing run blocker both when blocking DTs or when pulling out and having the athleticism and speed to get in front of Taylor or Hornung and block everything from LBs to DBs.

Anyway, enough ranting.

I think that Walter Jones is an amazing player and a first ballot HoF-er, but if he doens't get voted in immediately, he could easily be one of those guys who gets close, but just doesn't get in every year.

You got Jonathan Ogden coming up, who was a better player than Jones. We'll see how this works out.

dfosterf (15h) : Hasn"t Bosa missed more games than he has played in the last 3 years?
Mucky Tundra (19h) : He hasn't been too bad when healthy but I don't feel like I ever heard much about when he is
Zero2Cool (20h) : Felt like he was more interested in his body, than football. He flashed more than I expected

Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : even with the rapid fire posts?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I'm not certain it's a bot.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I've got to go to work soon which is a pity because I'm enthralled by this battle between the bot and Zero
