Quarless: An interesting TE for Packers
April, 24, 2010

By Kevin Seifert

There is quite an interesting story behind Penn State tight end Andrew Quarless, whom Green Bay selected with the first of its two fifth-round picks Saturday.

Anyone who watched Big 10 football last year knows Quarless was a scary tight end who weighs 255 pounds but gets downfield like a wide receiver. You might also know that Quarless had so many off-field issues that he had to talk Penn State coach Joe Paterno out of kicking him off the team.

First, here is the off-field history from Scouts Inc.:

2007: Cited for underage drinking two weeks before the start of the season. Penn State suspends him for the first two games of the season. 2008: Gets cited for two counts of DUI, a traffic violation and underage drinking for an incident that occurred at 3 a.m. on March 2. Penn State suspends him from the team until the conclusion of spring practice. Sentenced to 15 month rehabilitation program. Police find a small amount of marijuana in apartment he shares with A.J. Wallace, Abe Koroma and Maurice Evans. He is suspended for the season opener (Coastal Carolina.) Though he does not play, he is reinstated the following week (Oregon State) when information indicates he is not connected to the marijuana. 2009: Head coach Joe Paterno says Quarless has been a leader this year.

Quarless told Wisconsin reporters that he hasn't had a drink since the 2008 DUI arrest. He convinced Paterno that he would change his life. He also said he proved in a drug test that he had not used the marijuana found in his apartment.

Put down Quarless squarely in the risk-reward category. He could be the next Jermichael Finley, or we might never see him on the field.

I love the idea that college kids who drink and smoke pot are all of the sudden "character problems." I have no idea whether or not this kid will be a good player or not, but the fact that he liked to party a little in college has no absolutely no bearing on his future success.

For whatever reason, people seem to hold college athletes to a higher standard than other college kids. I know some seriously smart and well adjusted people who drank, smoked weed and did cocaine all through college (and still do from time to time). These people are your bankers, pilots, teachers, doctors, lawyers, etc. Yet we're supposed to concern ourselves because a Tight End may like to get high from time to time?

Again, I don't know if Quarless is going to be a good player or not, but his "character issues" from college aren't even remotely a problem in my mind.

I thought college years were the time of experimenting? Now experimenting means you have character flaws?

The DUI no excuse for that though.

This pick is amazing. If we can teach this kid to block even a little bit we could line up in a 2 TE formation (Quarless, Finley) with a single back (Grant/Starks) and 2 WR (Jennings, Driver) and audible to a shotgun spread. That would create serious match-up problems. Imagine it on the goal line.

I don't care about drug usage with these prospects at all. But DUI is just retarded.

Well, as he proved with a drug test, he never used the Marijuana.

Recall, if you will, the fits that Chewey and Keith Jackson created for DCs back in the mid-late 1990s. Now, envision that with two much better athletes. If the kid has his life on track...and it sounds as if he does....the Finley/Quarless combo could be lethal. And, the kid could also be the next in line if Finley gets all headcase on the next contract. While it left me scratching my head initially, it looks like a nice pick to me after some further thought.

Providing Rodgers with even more talented weapons like this is almost unfair.

Dear Lord...Rodgers is a rock star, isn't he?? Ted Thompson learned from Ron Wolf's greatest regret....not providing #4 with all the weapons he could have, and should have.

Zero2Cool (17m) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (4h) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (4h) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (5h) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (5h) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (5h) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (5h) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (5h) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (5h) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (5h) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (5h) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (5h) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (5h) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (5h) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (5h) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (6h) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (7h) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (7h) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (7h) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (23h) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Will there be a tracker on the ball or something?
