profootballrumors

Although he was a starter, he caught only 29 passes for 323 yards last season, and has career totals of only 85 catches and 909 yards in his four years with the team. Still, whether Aaron Rodgers needs big production from tight end or not, losing a starter is rarely a good thing, and he will need to be replaced.

I wonder if Hundley could get some snaps at TE. Then again, he's a rookie, just like Backman. Peppers would be a rookie at the position, so he wouldn't exactly be polished either, as we saw last year.

Gresham is the best TE available, but at what price and do we pay that knowing he may have a back problem? The fact he is still unsigned must mean there are medical concerns or the salary demands are too high. Both work against us signing him.

Perhaps we steal somebody off a practice squad.

Either way I think the author is correct that smart money says Quarless is not catching balls in Green Bay this year.

Shoot, trade a low rounder for someone you like and get them in before TC so Aaron and whomever it is have some time to get timing and tendencies down.

You know how much this org loves TE's. Ain't no way we're rolling forward minus Quarless and standing pat.

Ryan Taylor is with KC and may be cut by them... he's about as good as Quarless and knows what we do and plays ST's.

I would love to see Lyerla get another NFL shot, and I'd love to see that shot come in Green Bay.

Anyone else have any thoughts on his workout video (I thought it was posted in this thread), but now I can't find it)?

Okay, it was just in shorts, and it didn't show anything about blocking possibilities, but:

1. Looked good for someone who had a knee injury 7 months ago.
2. Great looking hands -- virtually every catch is a hands catch...how often has that *not* been the case with current/recent Packer TEs?
3. Like the repertoire of down field moves/head fakes he showed without the ball. If he's doing that in a workout video, what might he do against the DBs of MN/Det/Chi/etc?

I think the odds of him being asked to Packer training camp are 100-1 or worse, but I for one would love to see him getting a shot.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

If Quarless is truly gone, the more I look, the more I think his replacement is already on the roster.

Perrilo
Backman
Henry
Spears

Richard Rodgers had already passed Quarless, he will be #1.

Quarless was going to be the vet playing out his contract and moving on.
Looks like that is happening a year earlier than planned.
Is there anyone available via FA that is better than what you have?

More experienced yes, but more talented?
The coaches have seen these guys in OTA's, they already know the answer.

I'll put my money on Backman.

There will not be any replacement for Andrew Quarless when he is released. He also needs to be released sooner than later so the Packers won't be on the hook for his salary.

The Packers were probably going to keep four tight end's and now instead of four, will keep three on the final 53. The player I see benefiting from this is fullback Aaron Ripkowski who most surely will make the final 53 now, even if the Packers don't cut Quarless and he's on the commissioner/exempt list.

The Packers will not go rush an sign a tight end because the position has little value to the offense when you have these wide receivers. The tight end is essentially nothing more than a more agile offensive lineman who can play special teams more effectively.
• Jordy Nelson
 • Randall Cobb
 • Davante Adams
 • Jeff Janis
 • Jared Abbrederis
 • Ty Montgomery
• IF the Packers wanted a tight end that is available, they would have added him to their roster already seeing as they have only 89 on the current 90 man roster.

While Backman will most likely be inactive on game days as he learns unless he becomes good on STs.
