This is kind of a head scratcher in all honesty. Depth is always good, but TE wasn't really a major need with Havner and Lee being more than servicable. I don't know if this is an indictment of Havner and his off the field issues this Spring and/or Lee's decline in play, but meh, there will be competition in camp at TE.

If I'm not mistaken, Donald Lee is making about $3 million per year for the next two years. Given Jermichael's emergence, that's quite a bit of money to pay a backup TE. If management feels that this year or next, Quarless can adequately handle the backup TE role, they can release Lee and save that money.
There's a myriad of different ways to analyze any given pick, but what it boils down to is that management feels this kid can be a good player. Especially in the fifth round and later, most of the picks won't be in the league within a year or two. There is zero sense in drafting based on position or need. Teams are simply taking players they feel can have a career. If it's not the ideal position, so be it.
More importantly, very few, if any people on this board know shit about any of these players, so if it doesn't "make sense" to you or comes off as a "head scratcher", that might possibly be why.
