I miss the days when football was rough and fun ... and just a game.

In my opinion, people can do whatever they want on the field when it comes to celebrations, as long as it's not offensive or affect the playing field or another player.

If I were making 5 million a year playing the greatest sport in the world, scored a touchdown with thousands of fans screaming, hell yeah I would lose my mind a little. But instead, these kinds of rules would force me to hand the ball to the ref and act like I don't care that what I'm doing is fucking awesome.

Finland, I expect I would, too. Heck, the other night I was tempted to pump my fist after giving a successful lecture.

Even though I dislike showboating/taunting/etc. I'd never outlaw it or penalize it. Even though I might even "be offended", I wouldnt outlaw it.

Cast scorn on it, yes. Calli it childish, or tacky, or dumb, or offensive? Sure. But penalize it on the field or by fine? Gimme a break.

The solution to assholes is not to penalize them. It's to ignore them and sneer at them and associate with someone else and applaud those who manage to avoid the temptations. And to try not to be too much of an asshole myself.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I'm on the other side. I've never liked "me me me"-ing in sport, especially in a team sport. I understand how exuberance can get the better of one, but I've always admired those who treated their achievements the way Barry Sanders did: beat the other guy by being better, and then just give the ball to the official until the next time.

OK, we agree on Part 2 so I took it out.

Part 1 though, yes, football is a team sport. But remember, team celebrations were the first thing they outlawed.

Remember the days when a guy would score a TD and you'd have four people in the end zone high fiving?

Yep. I thought those silly, too. To my mind they have more "value" than the Deion high-step. To me that just accents the point that the solution to "bad" celebrations (however one might define "bad") is not ever going to be "change the rule book."

What about the Tebow eyeshadow rule?

I have already said I didn't like him wearing chapter/verse on his face, but I was never overly wound up about it- I just think it's like...

"Christian show-boating"--- or something. (I just coined that, thanks Tim for the inspiration)

Tebow says Super Bowl ad cost him endorsement deals
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 18, 2010 3:33 PM ET
Former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow says his decision to appear in a Super Bowl commercial for Focus on the Family cost him opportunities to appear in other commercials.

Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post reports that Tebow said during a speech in Nashville that multiple companies told him he couldn't represent their products if he appeared in the Focus on the Family ad.

Tebow didn't name the companies and said he didn't regret his decision to appear in the ad.

Whatever deals he may have lost, Tebow won't be hurting for endorsement money. He's already inked deals with Nike and EA Sports, and he has an arrangement with a Florida autograph company that sells his signature for $160 a pop.

It all seems weirdly interrelated to me, especially in light of how truly tame/lame/watered down in comparison to the (fabricated?) outcry that ad was supposedly creating.

Like I said, not wound up about it, my discontent going little further than a mere mention, just something I will apparently no longer be able to bitch about, and I prefer to have that option available to me.

Tebow's wearing of John 3:16 eyeshadow doesn't bother as much as some of his verbal witnessing -- that kind of thing tends to rub me the wrong way. I'm a "the strength of your commitment to God isn't shown by how much you boast about it" kind of guy.
