I would like Westbrook. The problem is that we already have 2 backs we most likely need to keep, and the draft is very deep in RBs. I guess I'd wait to see how the draft panned out and then, if we don't get a back, sign him up.

What's he like picking up blitzes? Anyone know? He's undersized and I can't imagine he's going to want to dive at legs after taking that knee to the helmet.

I'm reminded of an article from Sports Illustrated on concussions, where they interviewed Michael Strahan when he was still playing. He talked about an incident with Westbrook, where he was rushing and saw Westbrook staying back to block him. He says the next thing he (Strahan) remembered was trying to get up off his behind while Westbrook stood over him taunting him.

He added that in the game today, you have guys like that (referring to Westbrook) who are much stronger than they look (and went to talk about how the speed at which the game is played and these more explosive players all work to produce an environment where concussions are getting more common).

So from that, I'd have to think he's at least a decent blocker, and would be alright in blitz pick-up.

Also... people are actually worried that we may overpay for Westbrook.

REALLY? Are you serious? Do you even remember that Ted is still the GM of this team?

Yes Ted has made some bad signings in the past, but ... the dude is notorious for not over paying. If the price tag for Westbrook is high, you really think Ted will pull the trigger?

As NSD said, for years Westbrook was the entire Eagles' offense. He is pretty versatile, I mean you're talking about a RB who routinely motioned out to become a WR. And he regularly ran routes, made catches.

When people talk about finding a weapon like Harvin... I'd say that Westbrook was doing what Harvin did long before Harvin did it last year. If you believe all we are missing is a versatile WR/RB weapon ... you have to have your eyes light up when you hear the Packers are kicking the tires on signing Westbrook.

Now there are concerns, like Rock has repeatedly mentioned, on whether Westbrook can remain healthy and whether he has the legs to play at a high level. Those are valid concerns, and I expect the Packers to do their due diligence to make sure he can still contribute something. If Westbrook has something left in the tank, then I'm all for this signing.

liked what you had to say - a few comments thou. As far as Ted and him paying ...

I wouldnt doubt if some people started to change their minds on what Ted will pay.

We can take a look at jennings, chillars, the salary we gave to collins, pickett, and clifton. Heck didnt he double bush's salary last year when most of us hated him and wanted him off the team and would of been happy if st lois or (forgot whom else was looking at him) would take him off our hands.

Im not sure we can say that Ted is a real skimper when it comes to signing peeps. Or maybe just new peeps ... who knows. Only thing I know we spent alot of money recently when previously we were one of the few teams well below the cap (ie I know there is no cap this year).

Westbrook wouldn't make more than Grant so find his numbers this year and you can figure something out probably a lot easier. It'd be incentive base.

I would like the move. It gives the Packers a veteran who has been there before and he's legit third down back. He could be a real factor in the passing game. Rodgers checks down a lot so he needs that safety valve. Grant isn't that type of player.

Whoa. Did not know that. That changes my views on Westbrook big time, as I want to see Aaron touched a heck of a lot less in '10.

Then if the price is right and if he's healthy, let's get him. I've always liked Westbrook as a pass catcher. After all, that's what RBs should be used for anyways. 😉

I think if we fail to add a scat back type in the draft.. Westbrook will be our safety value.

Not a bad plan B in that case.. under the right contract numbers and understanding of his role in the offense.. something Green did very well last season.

Brian Westbrook will take a physical in St. Louis

by Mike Florio

After a couple of months on the shelf, running back Brian Westbrook could soon be getting a chance to continue his career.

Jason La Canfora of NFLN reports that Westbrook will go to St. Louis today for a physical with the Rams.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether he can pass a physical. Westbrook's knee has been a major problem of late. He also missed multiple games due to concussions in 2009.

The Packers also reportedly are interested.

Rams in "way, way early" stages of evaluating Westbrook

by Michael David Smith

The St. Louis Rams brought free agent running back Brian Westbrook in for a physical this weekend, but head coach Steve Spagnuolo said that doesn't mean a signing is imminent.

"Brian's in here because we want to do the physical, we want to do that part of it," Spagnuolo said, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "But then we'll see where it goes from there. It's way, way early in the stage."

It wasn't long ago that Westbrook would have been considered a major free-agent acquisition for any NFL team, let alone the worst team in the league. But at age 30, and coming off a season in which he had just 274 rushing yards, Westbrook seems like more of an afterthought than a priority for the Rams.

Of course, it's a moot point if Westbrook, who has a history of knee problems and concussions, can't pass the physical.
