Why offer a statement like this..

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/88838792.html

Last year's punter, Jeremy Kapinos, was released and the roster currently consists of untested Tim Masthay and Australian Rules veteran Chris Bryan.

"Just from a personnel standpoint, I know the ability in our competitive punting situation we have today is better than what it was last year," McCarthy said. "I feel strongly that well be better just from a pure productive standpoint of just punting the football. You know, there are some things we can do in punt protection that weve looked at and well adjust, theyre minor and you probably wont even notice them. (Coaches) Shawn Slocum and Chad Morton and I have gone through all of that. So well make some changes and adjustments there."

Of the two punters, McCarthy said: "I think theres more ability there. Where they are, what theyve shown to this point, I think itll be noticeable to all you guys when you see them kick for the first time. I think the talent level with those two individuals is definitely increased."

He hasn't seen them punt outside of workouts or tape... so how in the hell would he offer such an opinion? We drafted a punter a couple years ago that could punt the shit out of the ball in practice, yet flounder in games.

It is statements like this that degrade the value of his word to me.. personally.

Maybe he thinks we can get no worse.. but I think he should think back to 08... it can be worse than 09. lol.

There done nitpicking for the week. lol. (Honestly... it is a foster-esqe type rant in theory... on a much lighter scale.)

Still why offer such a statement until they punt in a game... what next are you going to try an sell in the offseason.. that Colledge is an all pro guard and Campen is a world class offensive line coach. 😉

Yeah, he was. Nothing chaps my ass worse than punting from the 40 yard (LOS) on 4 and 3 to have your dumb shit punter kick it for a touchback. For the job they have, hitting a quarter on the five yard should be virtually automatic. We are still suffering from what I call the curse of Craig Hentrich. We lost him because Wolf always had us up against the cap and Tennessee came in committed grand larceny. I'm not losing any sleep over replacing Kapinos.

Good punting is about ball placement. I could give a rats ass if punter can really boom them because normally they then outkick the coverage. Everybody laughed at Crazy Al Davis when he drafted Ray Guy, but that guy was a valuable player because he could put that ball anywhere he wanted too. Kapinos would would be the opposite of that.

Sadly this year's draft eligible punters look pretty shite, or so I'm led to believe.

Al Davis might've gone senile these last few years, but he was one of the bets in the business for a very long time. And one reason for that was because he knew how important special teams are far before anyone else seemed to do.

Ray Guy, Shane Lechler, what he envisioned Janikowski to be... If you can get guys like that, it makes life so much easier for your offense and defense. If you can have the opposing offense start in bad field position, it'll help your defense immensely. If you can kick it in consistently from your opponents 37 line, it's a huge boost to your offense.

The interesting thing is that Masthay was out there all of last year. Yet, they thought that Kapinos was the best option. Now we all of a sudden have way more talent by signing a guy who wasn't on a team throughout last year?

Wasn't Masthay injured last year. I think they only stuck with Kapinos because they wanted sability at the punting position. Kapinos looks good in comparasion to Derrick Frost but that still doesn't make him a good punter. Plus it's always possible the Packers draft a punter.
