This would make a ton of sense to me and help bolster the scouting department here.. Not sure how the dynamics would work since John Schneider was more in operations than scouting.. but having another strong football sense on the team wouldn't be a bad thing.

If McCloughan leaves 49ers, would Packers be next?

If Scot McCloughan has stepped down as the San Francisco 49ers' general manager, the Green Bay Packers are one of several logical landing spots for their former college scout.

According to a report on AOL FanHouse, McCloughan no longer is the 49ers' GM because of "longstanding personal issues." ESPN.com reported shortly thereafter that McCloughan is only on an extended leave of absence to deal with those issues, which were not identified. But the FanHouse report was by a former 49ers beat writer and cited several NFL sources.

McCloughan's only public response so far is a text message to FanHouse that said, "I'm fine and moving forward."

If McCloughan's indefinite leave becomes permanent, it could open the door to his return to the Packers because of his strong ties to GM Ted Thompson.

Former GM Ron Wolf hired McCloughan to join the Packers' college scouting staff in 1994, when Thompson was the Packers' director of pro personnel. In 1999 Mike Holmgren took McCloughan with him to Seattle to become the Seawhawks' director of college scouting. A year later, Holmgren hired Thompson to run his personnel department, and from 2000 through 2004, McCloughan worked closely with Thompson on the Seahawks' drafts.

When the Packers hired Thompson as GM in 2005, he wanted to bring McCloughan with him, but the 49ers hired McCloughan that same offseason to run their personnel department.

If McCloughan is out of work, there's a good chance Thompson will be interested in bringing him back to the Packers, though Cleveland and Seattle are just as likely landing spots also. Holmgren this offseason became the Browns' president and is re-making that scouting staff. Last month Seattle hired former Packers personnel executive John Schneider as GM, and McCloughan and Schneider worked together both with the Packers and Seahawks.

If McCloughan leaves the 49ers, there is no indication whether he'd be able to join a new team before or after the draft in late April. McCloughan has been heavily involved in scouting this year's draft class for the 49ers, and any financial agreement on his departure could prevent him from joining a new team until after the draft to protect the 49ers' proprietary information.

I wish he could bring over the 49ers 2 first round picks as well :-)

Certainly it sounds like he'd fit with TT.

Adding McCloughan would be HUGE. He is a bright GM that has helped turn around a struggling franchise by drafting Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree.

I hear there is a major rift between him and Singletary (over power) and Singletary (who has final say) won out w/ the Yorks.

With the Packers front office (actually) being looked upon as one of the best and with certain people interviewing for GM positions, it would make sense to have a person Thompson feels comfortable with and trusts in the fold (just in-case other get the opportunity to bolt).

Did McCarthy's time in SF intersect with McCloughan's tenure there?

Yes, kinda. Nolan brought him in the same year Thompson was named GM. BUT McCarthy was there when he was named the GM of the 49ers, but was than named the Packers HC not to long after (if I recall correctly).

I have only one question:

How good is this McCloughan at judging OL talent?

If he's good, sign him up. If he's not, I could care less.

He is a smart guy trained by Ron Wolf. Being out here in 49'er territory I have seen his interviews and he is a smart guy.

One of his first interviews, he said when he was with the Seahawks everytime they made a mistake on a draft pick it was because they didn't listen to their own board and someone was emotional about picking a guy. He said they went back and looked at what the scouts said and they were right.

He said during the draft you have to absolutely trust your board. He said when you put that much work into getting it right you should use the board. Doesn't that sound a lot like Ted Thomposn???

He traded pick 43 last year in a not very good draft class for pick 17 in this year's good draft class.

If it works out it will be very good for the Packers.

He is VERY SMART and a great evaluator of talent. He knows how to communicate well and work the cap. I think if he is added to the front office the Packers would benefit GREATLY and have the top F.O. in the NFL.

The 49ers are not making a good move by letting him go. It will hurt them in the long run.

He learned under Ron Wolf in Green Bay where he worked w/ Ted Thompson as scouts. He then went to Seattle w/ Holmgren and worked under Thompson in Seattle as his "top lieutenant". Thompson wanted to bring him over to Green Bay when he got the GM job, but SF offered their GM job to him after he was considering coming to Green Bay.

I have heard it may happen after the draft, because the 49ers do not want him in the Packers draft room w/ knowledge of what the 49ers most likely would do in the draft. They took his files away from him, but they can't take away his brain and what he already knows.

My gut tells me he will be in Green Bay by July in Schneider's old role.
