As good as the front office of the Packers is, they could afford to lose a guy like Schneider. He and McKenzie were both co-Directors of Football Operations.
Can anyone actually find another NFL team that has two people filling in the same position in the front office?
It is interesting to note that Bedard last year, in covering the Scouting Combine, mentioned that retired Long Snapper Rob Davis was doing a lot of the work with the draft-hopefuls that was similar in nature to what Schneider had done at the combine as a member of the Packers Front Office.
As Bedard mentioned today, the Packers do not need anyone to fill Schneider's old job / role. In addition, the Packers don't have (or need to create) any openings within their front office, because those already in there have done nothing to warrant being fired.
McCloughan, from the sounds of it, is not being fired with cause. Thus, he'll still collect his salary from the 49ers. I could see Ted extending a branch to him to allow him an opportunity to keep himself busy while he figures things out / looks to catch on with another team.
But I could also see Holmgren doing the same with the Browns. Quite frankly, Holmgren, in trying to revamp the FO of the Browns needs McCloughan more so than the Packers. It is not a stretch to say that signs point to him catching on with the Browns more so than signing with Green Bay.
