We have been playing vanilla defensa rushing 4 and dropping the other 7 players in coverage this year.
Kampy gets double or triple teamed and the rest of the line dances around.
We can't stop the run at all.

Why do we keep playing in this way?

Given that we have a lot of very good linebackers and a very thin DL without depth why don't we switch to 3-4 ? Pop - Barnett - Bishop - Hawk with Chillar in the rotation seems to be like a very elite group of linebackers.

And finally can we get the defensive green dot moved to Charles Woodson instead of Barnett? Barnett seems to be listening to music this year, maybe he is confused by the headset ?

Just some ideas....

I think we have been playing that way cause our D hasn't been good enough to get to their QB OR too stop the run. We have sucked in both areas.
To me, they need to blitz like mad. What have we got to lose? They arn't getting it done the other way.

It is a pretty simple assignment based defense.. Gap control up front, backers read play and attack or drop.. and man up corner play...

It is a solid defensive strategy if you have three basic things...

1) A line that can win one on one matchups

2) Have solid cover corners.. with assignment sure safeties over the top.

3) Players that stay within their assignments.. especially up front.

This is a defense that is vanilla, but has very few mental breakdowns because the assignments are pretty simple. But it is predictable in nature, and if you are losing one on one match ups.. it is more prone to failure.

We are losing at the LOS, which is going to breakdown almost any coverage scheme.. and to date, Sanders isn't willing to blitz, which is a sign of one of two things..

1) Lack of confidence if the flexibility in assignments in coverage..

2) Of lack of confidence in the ability to get there even with pressure..

Dating back to the Cowboys game last year.. or even further back, it is evident the Sanders lacks confidence in his players, period.

I'm a big fan of the 3-4. And with our line backers, i dont know why not try it? Seems like wasting talent..Espicially like you pointed out luigis. We are thin on the D Line.

Not sure you can say it better then that. I agree he has no confidence in his players...and will go a step further in that they have none in him it appears

It isn't just as simple as changing the alignment.. your dline play has to change and generally 4-3 DT's don't make good 3-4 NT.

Add to it the Backers need to change their assignment and reads..

Not saying it is impossible, but what is going to change if we aren't assignment sure within this scheme?

Also.. Barnett would make a awful 3-4 inside back.. Hodge and Bishop are more suited (I know Hodge isn't here anymore).. you have to be able to take on blockers.. something we struggle at with less contact with olineman.

You can't just decide to switch our ENTIRE defensive scheme partway through the season. They have spent the whole offseason using the 4-3 scheme, going to the 3-4 would make our D even worse. Too much confusion would occur.

And yes, I am aware that they did practice a little 3-4 during training camp but NOWHERE near the amount needed to use it this season.

Everyone needs to relax. This is a long season. There are teams every year that stinmk it up at the beginning of the season but end up making the playoffs. Actually the Packers started 1-4 a couple times and still made the playoffs.

Going to a 3-4 in mid stream would be impossible at this time. You have three days to get ready for the next team let alone install a completely new system.

You do that before the season starts.

You do this with a big and bad middle guard that anchors the center and can fight double teams and hold his ground. It's great to have good LB's but without this guy the opposing team will eat you up and spit you out.

I disagree with the assessment Sanders lacks confidence and go the other way with the thought he has much confidence in the ability of the DL to do what they are supposed to do. Unfortunately, they haven't proven they can on a consistant basis.

When you see MORE blitzing is when you know he no longer feels the front four can create the pressure the base package calls for. Even then you still have to go base more than not or the offense will start picking it up. You may not remember the Slowik days but it looked more like a track meet than a football game and it was always the other guy that got to the finish line first.

This 3-4 thought might look good and smell good but I can tell you once you put it in your mouth you'll spit it out. It's too late to go there now.
