Colts dump starting guard Ryan Lilja

Colts center Jeff Saturday disagreed with President Bill Polian's suggestion that the team's offensive line struggled in the Super Bowl.

But Polian is the one that makes personnel decisions, and he spoke loud and clear by releasing starting guard Ryan Lilja Monday, according to Alex Marvez of Fox.

Lilja was due a $1.73 million bonus soon, but the move is still surprising. He started every game for the Colts last season and is only 28 years old.

Ultimately, the Colts need better run blockers and Polian decided Lilja was only going to get in the way with a hefty base salary. Polian trusts the team's ability to develop players and he's usually right.

That trust allows Polian to make strong statements in print and on the transaction wire.

hmmm I dont know enough about our Oline to know what we need improved the most. ie I keep hearing LT but I know thats a tough spot to fill.

Would this guy help us or are our guards decent enough?

I wouldn't mind signing him. Kick Spitz back to center and let Lilja and Sitton man the guard spots. Would be a nice addition.

Is he worth it? His team did go to the SB. His an upgrade over anyone on our line.

Does he play right guard or left guard?

The only reason I wouldn't look at him is if he only plays the same position as Sitton.

Anyone who has been involved in protecting Peyton Manning should have a look compared to Messrs. Colledge, Spitz, et al.

I'd be real skeptical signing an Indy o-lineman. I believe they get away with murder in pass blocking. The NFL has to protect one of their meal tickets. And if Lilja is being cut for run blocking deficiencies, then I absolutely want nothing to do with him.

That's one reason I'd like to see Lang play left guard, I know he has the testicles to run block. After watching College for 4 years, a change has to be made not named Spitz.
