Lombardi Avenue posted:

Positive: Offensive line

The Packers should be prepared for almost any pass rush that they face this season. So far, the unit has played the Bears, Vikings, Lions, and Cowboys, and held their own each time. While the Oakland pass rush isn’t quite as imposing, the protection for Aaron Rodgers was there from wire-to-wire. Both tackles have been tremendous all season, and Elgton Jenkins looks like an eventual star.

The Packers are going to face some tough units, assuming they can get into the playoffs. The San Fransisco 49ers look unstoppable upfront, as do the Saints led by Cameron Hayward. The Packers will have their hands full come playoff time, but the offensive line will not be a liability. Aaron Rodgers will have time to throw in the postseason.

12 strong performance is contingent upon the confidence of his offensive line. The clear upgrades at guard from last year would finally appear to be bearing fruit, not only in pass protection, but in the run game.

While the overall play of the OL has been pretty good against some outstanding competition, Lombardi Ave is slightly off in their assessment when they say

both tackles have been tremendous all season.

Bakhtiari has had more than his usual share of struggles. PFF has ranked pretty low on several games this season. Turner has been more or less solid but he turned in some weak performances.

All reasonable points....but don't forget:

Bakhtiari has been so damn good, any minimal dropoff is still damn good.
If Turner has been only solid, that is still a major upgrade from last year.
and clearly, the main point of my post, not Lombardi Avenue, is that Jenkins and Turner, in toto, are much better than the guys last year
they are all learning a new system, so some aspect of burn-in has been necessary.
It wasn't that his performance dropped from his normal sensational level to one that is above average. PFF was grading him, at least early in the season, as being rather poor. By that I mean he was one of the lowest rated OT in the league the first few weeks. I can't say if their analysis is correct or not. I don't have a website link to prove this. I don't subscribe to their website. I was listening to a podcast where it was being retold. Now all of that doesn't mean that Bak hasn't improved since the first few weeks. I think PFF has indicated that he is doing better in their ratings in recent weeks.

In my first post I was commenting directly on the Lombardi Ave quote. They said

both tackles have been tremendous all season.

    not you.

Once again I am not trying to dispute you. I am saying that Lombardi Ave writer is enjoying the green and gold Koolaid a little bit too much. There have been issues. As you pointed out it does take time to get the new system down. The Packers seem to be correcting it. I am glad for that but it's inaccurate to proclaim the OT play as "tremendous". If they said Bulaga's play has been tremendous they would have been correct.

Points taken and agreed without further contestation.

In regard to PFF ratings, keep in mind that Bahktiari faced Mack and Floyd in week 1 and Griffin, Barr, and Hunter in week 2 and Von Miller in week 3. So I am willing to cut him some slack.

Further, they were, and are continuing to learn the offense.

Yeah one of the major failings of the PFF rating is they don't give a rat's @$$ who you are playing. They only look at the player's performance. I didn't mention that. My bad. As to who Bak faced, I thought most of the defenders you mention lined up more often over Bulaga than they did Bak. Which of course makes Bulaga's play all the more impressive.
