I've never been such an advocate of changing the NFL's overtime rules. Not until last night. Yes, it was my team that was bitten. Yes, it took some non-objective 'reasoning' to come to this conclusion. But hear me out.

I've always loved the NCAA's rules. Give both teams a shot. Continue until one team has a higher score than the other.

I never really minded the NFL's rules. It's fair enough. No reason to change it.

Until it hit me today at work. Today's NFL is an offensive league. It's VERY well known as such. The rules are even catered for high scoring offenses. So then.. Why hasn't the OT rules changed? The defense is already at an disadvantage.

My 'solution'? I dunno.. Maybe play it like it's another half of NFL football. Call heads/tails, kickoff.. If the offense scores a TD, then they win. If the offensive team kicks a FG, then team B gets the ball at the exact spot that team A started at. If team B scores a TD, they win (via NCAA rules), but if they kick a FG.. then back to team A at original spot.

It's probably has many flaws.. But something like that in this offensive minded league has GOT to be better than the current rules.

So, PackersHome.. what says you? Vote and post reasons/solutions!

Interesting, a similar discussion took place on another sports board I frequent, one person had a very good explanation of his opinion that I really like and agreed with...

From a fan perspective what is the best option?

-a 3 minute drive (typically aided by a PI penalty) with a FG.
-another full or partial quarter of action
-some weird non traditional offensive shootout

The 3 minute drive FG shit is boring and almost always fails to capture any of the excitement seen throughout the previous 60 minutes of football.

Another quarter (be it 8, 10 or 15 minutes) would give continuing action that doesn't end on the first FG and teams would continue to drive and play hard football, building up until yet another dramatic finish at the end of the quarter. Plenty of continued excitement within the standard rules of football. win!

The shootout isn't football, it's cheap thrills that undermines two facets of the sport, defence and special teams. There's no threat of a long FG, there's no need for punts and the strategic battle of field position, there's no real defence cause they basically need to be perfect starting just outside the fuckin redzone. It's not football, it's garbage and a mockery of what makes football so awesome. Why do they bother playing extra innings in baseball? Why not just have a fucking HR derby after 9 innings? Stupid ass shit.

Go ahead and piss and moan that NFL'ers might get hurt playing an extra 15 minutes and blah blah blah. You all know playing more football is the best option for fans (more football = win), the nfl (extended advert money = win) and the game (stays true to the actual sport).

They should just make it so a team needs 4 points in overtime.

Wow that's a great post. Shootouts can be fun in hockey or college ball but I really don't like the idea in the NFL even though I think it's better than the current rules. Something like a 10 minute quarter might be interesting.

Of course if you really wanted it to be a shootout why not do it hockey style. Make a the team that wins the toss pick who wants to kick the field goal first. Both teams kick 25 yard field goals, if they both make it then they go to 30 yarders. If they both make them than go to 35 yarders and so on in 5 yard increments. Now that would be fun 🙂

I've long felt the "each team one possession, then sudden death" idea would be an improvement.

I'm not sure it's particularly logical, but I think after battling 60 minutes to a tie it should be so dependent on a single coin toss. Each team should have one chance to score and one chance to stop the other guy from scoring.

I've never liked the college rule. All those double and triple and quadruple overtimes cheapen the game. Multiple overtimes should be a huge rarity. The kind of thing that only happens in a playoff game after an extra period.

Actually, though, to my mind, the old system of "ties" for regular season games was just fine. I hate the playing-for-overtime shit. I'd reserve the overtime rules, whatever it is, for playoff games.

(Unless it was the Colts vs. the Cowboys, of course, in which case I would love it for those two teams to have to share the ignominy of the only Super Bowl tie in history. 🙂 )
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

6 points wins it. THAT is how it should be done.

I'm fine with the system as it is. Never had a problem with it.

The additional quarter is an interesting idea, but you'd have to closely watch how player fatigue contributes to injuries.

There's an easy solution to that: ditch the senseless 45-man gameday active roster.

I like the rules as they are. I hate the NCAA rules. It turns football into such a controlled environment. I hate that.

beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job

Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
