This would be a home-run hire if Matt LaFleur can bring the former Bucs’ OC to Green Bay. After missing out on the Green Bay Packers ’ head coaching job, it appears that Todd Monken is still interested in working for the organization.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers ’ offensive coordinator interviewed with the team over the weekend, but missed out on the position when the Packers picked Matt LaFleur instead. Now, there’s a chance that Green Bay could land both of the offensive minds who were reportedly at the top of their board following the first set of head coaching interviews .

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler , Monken will interview for the Packers’ offensive coordinator position in the coming days. However, he also reportedly has a few other interviews lined up with other teams for the same job, as the Lions  and Browns  are both on his itinerary.
Monken’s experience and success leading an offense would be an excellent addition to the LaFleur’s staff.

He called plays for 15 of the the Buccaneers’ 16 games in 2018, leading them to a ninth-place finish in passing DVOA and a third-place rank in total yards. However, he did not call plays during his first two years in Tampa, as head coach Dirk Koetter held those duties; therefore, he would not necessarily be taking a significant step back by taking a non-playcalling coordinator position under LaFleur in Green Bay. In addition, his experience as a college head coach (at Southern Mississippi) could keep him in serious consideration for head coaching jobs in future years.

APC’s Paul Noonan expanded on Monken’s offensive philosophy recently . It seems logical that his approach and focus on explosive plays would mesh well with LaFleur, who also values picking up chunks of yardage at once. In addition, Monken would likely bring some Air Coryell and Air Raid influences to the table, which could further diversify the Shanahan-style West Coast system that LaFleur will implement.

If the Packers manage to hire Monken, fans — and quarterback Aaron Rodgers  — should rejoice. His presence would give the team a coordinator with a proven track record of success in leading an NFL offense and would put Rodgers  on a trajectory towards a bounce-back season in 2019.

Sounds good to me. Pushing the ball down the field will help. But it conflicts a bit with Rodgers fear of throwing any ints at all.

Todd Monken was rumored to be the first runner up for the Packers and Jets jobs.

Very talented and very aggressive offense, of course, they had help from their GM getting more weapons than most teams have.

In a 4 year span...
1st overall pick on QB
7th overall pick on WR
19th overall pick on TE
and signing WR DeSean Jackson

On one hand, they did a GREAT JOB with making an aggressive offense... on the other, a surprising amount was invested to it that other coaches don't necessarily get.... so they made more, with more (and their defense really suffered). So I'm not sure how much to credit the coaches, vs heavy/high investment by the GM.

I would be curious to see how Monken would mesh with LaFleur. The idea of diversifying the offense is appealing, and this team needs creative plays down the field. I like that LaFleur is thinking outside-the-box by looking at someone who was a rival (to getting the head job) and someone who doesn’t fall within the same coaching tree.

Somewhat surprising that Arians would have chosen Byron Leftwich over him. His offense with all the high powered tools, didn't do much against the Bears, Ravens, and other decent defenses. I don't know if that was Winston or other reasons,...thoughts???

Ariens obviously saw enough in him to give him his start in AZ so it doesn't surprise me that he brought him on board in TB.

That just leaves Gary Kubiak, who was thought to be taken until a couple days ago.

But I do like the idea of Monken... also he's name could get hot and a head coach and job, and the space can open up again when LaFleur's preferred coach if he's contract is then up... (when ever that is)

I haven't run the numbers, but just from a quick glance, I wonder if the Bucs did a LOT worse against 3-4 teams.for so e rwason. All the huge scores seem to be against 4-3 and only a few of the low scoring ones.

Whomever GB selects to offer the OC post to, I just hope that they will try to taylor the offense to fit the personal rather than trying to get the players to conform to a rigidly inflexible sys. So far that does not seen to be the case, but time will tell the tale.

Ego may be part of this equation as LaFleur is expected to call the offensive plays. GB's new OC will need to accept this and work to support LaFleur's play calls by preparing the offense to run those plays. He will have to work with and not compete with the HC on the plays being called. Game plans will sometimes have to be modified to fit the need and good planning ahead of time by both the HC and the OC will be necessary.

Finally, as qualified as a man may be, personality conflicts do occur. I hope that the interview process sorts this kind of thing out ahead of time, but sometimes how people act with superiors is opposite with how they act with subordinates. Care must be exercised with all aspects of the candidates to ensure that GB will have good team "chemistry".

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.

buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
