As always, I choose to give Driver the benefit of the doubt until more details emerge. Just as I have too much love and respect for our Constitution to try someone in the court of public opinion, so also I have too much love and respect for the game to try these players in the court of "unnamed sources" absent any hard evidence. I refuse to give these fluff stories much weight. These reporters are just as bored as we are, and so giving us what we want -- something to talk about in the off-season -- nothing more. Therefore, we should regard these stories in that light.

That being said, I am watching the reactions of certain members of this forum with amusement. Some of the same members who were so quick to jump on Collins before the truth of the matter was revealed are rushing to make allowances for Driver -- despite an equal paucity of evidence one way or the other. Please, people, let's stop playing favorites. Either you trust these "unnamed sources" or you don't. Don't judge the merits of the story based on how much you personally like the player. That's just disingenuous.

I'm not playing favorites. Driver doesn't really need to be at OTA's in my opinion. I want him on my team, and I want him at OTA's. . Collins on the other hand, needs to be there. He plays the position of QB of the defense, on a new defense, and imo is over-rated as a player. VERY over rated. Either Nick's agent is a scum-sucking liar, a manipulative prick, or Nick wasn't going to be there, regardless of personal issues. My point is that the truth of the matter isn't known. I'm sorry his dad died, but those agent comments were not created in a vacuum.

Call me a dick. I'm being observant.

Donald Driver's agent revealed that he has been involved in talks with the Packers to rework his client's contract.
The agent, Jordan Woy, neglected to say if the talks were serious in nature, much less if a deal was close. While Driver is skipping voluntary workouts, Woy said the veteran receiver would not miss any mandatory activities.

If Driver wants a new contract, that's one thing, but I don't see why everyone is acting like he's holding out on OTA's. Isn't he one of those veterans that usually skips the majority of OTA's. Like his agent said, it's not mandatory.

Driver is one of the leaders who is always there helping out the young guys. This is not typical of Driver to miss anything team related like this.

It happened within about 2 seconds of this going public, haze.

Zero hit it right on the head with his post. I would say that last year, while Donald's production fell, he was THE leader out there for the young guys.

He not only showed his fellow wide receivers a truly awesome display of unselfishness at a position notorious for the opposite...he not only showed the rest of the team...he showed us and the rest of the the NFL that kind of incredible character we would hope that all possess. He showed class.

I think he is probably quite a bit overpaid if the NFL of today is merely a critical examination of statistics and production, coupled with age and alternatives. Every snap of the ball that Donald Driver is in there is also a snap that another, younger player did not get.

Thing is, not only is Donald an incredible person, he is also an incredible athlete. I think he can still play as a 1b/ #2 receiver, or for that matter, if Jenning went down, go back to being a #1 receiver.

The noise he is making is not without risk, imo. If his agent attempts to bite off more than can be chewed, he might find himself being forced into a pay CUT instead of pay increase. This is of course speculation, but given his age and falling production (for hardball negotiating purposes, for example) it is a possibility.

My personal opinion is that DD wants a guarantee, he feels that heat upon his shoulder (which is a strong hint to the Crabtree lovers amongst us) from his contemporaries, and feels that absent a guarantee, he just might get screwed... Not by Ted Thompson (to the Ted haters) but by life as we know it in the National Football League, a/k/a the not for long league---a/k/a --- the what have you done for me lately league.

I say pay him. I'm not saying increase his pay by one nickel. His guarantee is zero. Give him a big fat roster bonus instead of a base with LTBE's--- No more money involved whatsoever--we would just be voting with our wallets that Donald Driver IS a Green Bay Packer in 2009. We would be telling him that in June instead of September.

Who can't be good with that concept? Looks to me that the instantaneous response he got when he made this VERY minor disturbance spoke volumes of his value as a player, leader, and one who does not so much as ripple the waters without it being serious to him. Looks to me like the GBP know this one whole hell of a lot better than I do.

It's an opinion.
