Frazier was the Minnesota Vikings’ head coach from 2011 to 2013.

According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports , former Minnesota Vikings  head coach Leslie Frazier was in Green Bay for two days last week following his time at the NFL’s Accelerator Program. The Accelerator Program is designed to prep minority and women coaches through “leadership development and networking opportunities .” Each NFL team sent at least one coach with the Green Bay Packers  being represented by passing game coordinator Greg Williams.

Coaches in attendance ranged from new hires who just transitioned from the college game to former head coaches like Anthony Lynn, Willie Taggart and Frazier. Prior to becoming the head coach for the Vikings, Frazier was the assistant head coach of the 2006 Indianapolis Colts , who won the Super Bowl  that year. From there. Frazier was hired as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator, which then led to a promotion to assistant head coach and later simply head coach. Since his time in Minnesota, he’s been the defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers  and most recently the Buffalo Bills , where he held the role from 2017-2022 — along with the assistant head coach title since 2020.

Frazier, in a surprising move, stepped away from the Bills this offseason, leading to many analysts speculating that the 64-year-old would retire from the sport until an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer set the record straight . According to Frazier, his goal is to be a head coach and he’s going to spend his “time off” to visit friends around the league while he tries to build a case for himself during the next hiring window. As Anderson noted, Frazier also spent time with the Washington Commanders, following the Accelerator Program, and is set to visit the New York Giants , too.

Beyond Frazier’s head coaching ambitions, though, the elephant in the room is that the Packers might be in the mix for a new defensive coordinator next January, a role that Frazier could fill — if things don’t pan out for him on the head coaching front. As we’ve all noticed over the years, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur typically brings in coaches he has ties to in some way and now Frazier has been added to the list.

When offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett left for the Denver Broncos  last offseason, Adam Stenavich was promoted from offensive line coach and former assistant offensive line coach Luke Butkus was made the led offensive line coach. Defensively, LaFleur hired coordinator Joe Barry, who LaFleur had spent time with during their run together with the Los Angeles Rams , after Mike Pettine was fired. Williams, the Packers’ new passing game coordinator, had previously worked with Barry with the San Diego Chargers .

Last season, the Packers made the mid-season addition of analyst Aubrey Pleasant, who had previously worked with both LaFleur and Barry with the Rams and Washington Redskins, when the former Lions passing game coordinator was fired from Detroit. In 2023, Green Bay added analyst Tim Lester, who recently was the head coach of Western Michigan — his alma mater. During his college days, LaFleur was a backup quarterback to Lester at WMU.

If Barry is moved on from after the 2023 season, don’t be surprised if Frazier ends up on a short list of names that are candidates to be the next Packers defensive coordinator. If trends continue, LaFleur will want someone familiar in the foxhole with him and Frazier’s short visit to Green Bay could have provided some answers to questions he had.

This might be absolutely nothing, as it sounds like he's going around meeting a number of teams, and it was only two days, which could of just been meet and greet.

But it also could of been something.

I was going to say, I wonder if the Packers would consider a senior analysis role... but looks like the Packers already have someone in that spot with Tim Lester, former head coach of Western Michigan. But looks like all his experience has been on the Offensive side of the ball, but he's listed under the defense as senior analysis. Which it could be good to ha e the other side of the Fields perspective on things.

But it would also be nice to get a veteran g
coach to keep an eye on Barry and suggest things to him.

Or you know, get someone you like, like Jim Leonhard sitting there ready to take over in case you plan 9n going in a different direction going forward.

At 64 Frazier is an old man. I should know. I'm 64 as well. Then again I am 5 months older so there is that.

If I was a HC I would want someone who is innovative and on the way up. Not someone that has shown what they can do and yet doesn't seem to make a big enough impact to stay with an organization for more than a few years.

About the only coaching position I think he had any kind of success at is as a seconday coach. The Packers have Ryan Downard. This is his first year. He's 34. While Frazier might be interiguing I am willing to see what Downard can do.

He's been with the Packers since 2018, but lots of new titles in recent years, but I believe he's been working with the Safeties since 2019.
  • Green Bay Packers (2018)
  • Defensive quality control coach
  • Green Bay Packers (2019–2021)
  • Assistant defensive backs coach
  • Green Bay Packers (2022)
  • Safeties coach
  • Green Bay Packers (2023–present)
  • Defensive backs coach

Also, I'm kinda worried that the Safeties suddenly played a lot worse after he officially became the Safeties coach, but he was supposedly working with the Safeties a number of years before that too.

Sounds like Leonhard is taking the season off, partly to have and recover from Hip surgery.

But I wonder how coaches felt about Barry coming in from the outside and jumping all of them... didn't seem to sit well with former DB coach Jerry Gray, of course, maybe they were arguing about something else.

Leonhard hasn't even officially coached an NFL player yet. Wonder how the coaches would take that.

I'm not saying don't do it..., just I wonder.

Also hell, if Leonhard is going to be sitting home watching TV, LaFleaur should ask him to follow the Packers and give any helpful advice or hints he sees.

Could help both sides of the ball, from either here is what I would do on defense, or something like, man your OL is really tipping their hand on play type (which I say that after seeing a video suggesting the Packers OTs showed weather a run or pass was coming just by their stances. If they want to have play action, then they really need to clean that up, or get them to purposely line up in the wrong stance when running play action.

The inference of the thread was that he was being considered for consulting/coaching role.   I stand by my excellent and appropriate comments.

But yes visiting for the program, but the program is to get the people in the program (like him) into higher roles. Which for him, would be head coach.

That's not currently expected to be open in Green Bay in the near future, so I just went to the closest role people think might be open soon, which is defensive coordinator (which he has done a number of times and more successful than the Packers current guy in the role), and just added consulting/advisory role.

SInce 2019 Dom Capers has been a Senior defensive assistant, and Vic Fangio (whom worked under Capers and known for intervening the current defensive style the Packers are copying) was a consultant for the Eagles last year. They're already taken for this season.

I just think if there is someone LaFleaur trust, that might be helpful and speed up him getting after his defensive staff.

Of course some have argued LaFleaur's worse skill as head coach has seemed to be his decision on whom to hire as coaches.

But Jim Leonhard is free so he potentially would be a good selection, and he spent a year learning with Wisconsin before being hired as DB coach with Wisconsin. So this would give him a year with the Packers, before considering hiring him for a role.

The guy I could find, most familiar with the Packers system, that's available is Ed Donatell... of course, that's because the Vikings just fired him after one season as defensive coordinator. But Donatell seemed to be Vic Fangio (whom framed this scheme) right hand guy from 2011 to 2021. So in theory he should know the system better than just about anyone (and maybe has a grudge against the Vikings... but also maybe not head defensive material) and yes Ed Donatell was Packers defensive coordinator from 2000 to 2003. And Fangio and Donatell were on the 49ers and Bears defenses that gave the Packers hell from 2011 to 2018.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/06/05/leslie-frazier-visits-with-packers-commanders-giants/

The official story out of Buffalo in late February was that defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was taking a year off from coaching. The unofficial story always seemed to be that he got a belated nudge from the Bills, as the unofficial scapegoat for the team’s failure to live up to sky-high expectations in 2022. Frazier has made it clear that he intends to return in 2023. If he does, it likely will be with a team other than the Bills. Josina Anderson of CBS Sports recently reported that Frazier had spent two days visiting with the Packers, was then spending two days visiting with the Commanders, and would then spend two days visiting with the Giants. Frazier played with Commanders head coach Ron Rivera in Chicago, and he coached with Giants head coach Brian Daboll in Buffalo. Frazier previously coached the Vikings. He has made it clear that he still hopes to have another chance to be a head coach. In Frazier’s absence, Bills coach Sean McDermott will handle the defensive play calling. It’s possibly an all-in move from McDermott that could have significant repercussions for someone other than Frazier this time around, if the Bills fail to get deep into January again.

If true, sounds like Frazier got let go... and he's putting out feelers to get hired next year. Which to me MIGHT suggest... Sean McDermott might be on a hot seat with the Bills and Joe Barry might be on the hot seat with the Packers, as there didn't seem to be any direct Packers connection there. Since 2007 (with exception of 2016 as DB coach), Leslie Frazier has been defensive coordinator or higher.

Of course some have argued LaFleaur's worse skill as head coach has seemed to be his decision on whom to hire as coaches.

One could argue LaFleaur has had troubles hiring defensive coordinator... he might be wondering if hiring a long term veteran Defensive Coordinator might fix that as well.

Leslie Frazier is probably on the look out for at minimum, a defensive coordinator position. Like 2016, he might have to take a lower spot, but this very well could of been a meet and greet for future coordinator opening possiblities.

Leslie Frazier will not be the Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator in 2024.
