The odd man out in the fight for the final starting spot on the offensive line, Spitz has stopped playing three positions and is being used solely at center.

It's his natural position, and after he was given almost no opportunity to compete at guard, it very well could be that the Packers are showcasing him for other teams.

If Spitz is back to full health, he could be good trade bait. A defensive lineman or outside linebacker might be nice, or a mid to late round draft pick.

One quibble I have with the article is they say that Spitz made a mistake by snapping the ball too quickly at the end of the first half. There was less than one second left on the clock when he snapped the ball. He could not have waited any longer.

How does a center snap the ball prematurely? Did he not wait to ensure everyone was set a full second before snapping?

I don't want to trade Spitz. I like him way more than Colledge. Spitz is good depth at both center and guard.

I was just about to make a new topic on this...

This is stupid. The guy can play three positions - even if he's not starting, that's a valuable backup. Why the hell wouldn't we cut Barbre and Giacommini instead? Who plays C if Wells goes down - Dietrich-Smith?

Yeah I'm not buying into this at all, unless maybe Spitz asked for the trade.

For starters he's coming off a back injury. How often are teams interesting in a guy coming off of a back injury unless they were great at one point? Spitz has been good at time but not great.

Colledge and Bulaga showed to be better than Spitz at LG that's why he's working at C only. Also because his back might not be totally healthy and the Center position is where Spitz has the most upside as he's kinda close on to the small size for OG. And he bring more power than most C.

If someone is traded it's going to be Barbre or Dietrich-Smith. I think both are good back-ups (well Barbre at OG) but with this depth it's going to be hard for them to make the roster unless the coaches keep extra OL which I don't want as the Packers have talented players at TE and FB to keep extra of first. (WR also has talented guys but I just want 5 of them not the extras.)

I think that was the ruling. So it was really the fault of whichever player(s) were not set when the ball was snapped.

I'm not especially eager for Spitz to get traded, but the Packers could get by without him, with Bulaga, Lang, and Dietrich-Smith backing up the interior O-line positions.

Spitz may have some trade value because he's a proven commodity. Not great, but serviceable. Barbre and Dietrich-Smith, on the other hand, are virtually worthless as trade bait because they may not make the roster anyway. You can't get something for nothing.

I think you might be misunderstanding the premise of this trade. I'm sure it's not that the Packers do not want Spitz, it's just that he may actually be able to yield this team something. Hopefully that something is significant, as the other backups will not likely yield much.

I do not want to trade Spitz just for the sake of trading him, but if we could get a decent CB, S, or pass rusher, I would be all about it. A team isn't going to get something good in return for nothing . . . usually.

This person is just speculating though, so I wouldn't worry right away. I think it's Colledge who will be dealt if he loses the job at guard.
