You can't get something for nothing.

Yeah I'm not buying into this at all, unless maybe Spitz asked for the trade.

For starters he's coming off a back injury. How often are teams interesting in a guy coming off of a back injury unless they were great at one point? Spitz has been good at time but not great.

Colledge and Bulaga showed to be better than Spitz at LG that's why he's working at C only. Also because his back might not be totally healthy and the Center position is where Spitz has the most upside as he's kinda close on to the small size for OG. And he bring more power than most C.

If someone is traded it's going to be Barbre or Dietrich-Smith. I think both are good back-ups (well Barbre at OG) but with this depth it's going to be hard for them to make the roster unless the coaches keep extra OL which I don't want as the Packers have talented players at TE and FB to keep extra of first. (WR also has talented guys but I just want 5 of them not the extras.)

I think you might be misunderstanding the premise of this trade. I'm sure it's not that the Packers do not want Spitz, it's just that he may actually be able to yield this team something. Hopefully that something is significant, as the other backups will not likely yield much.

I do not want to trade Spitz just for the sake of trading him, but if we could get a decent CB, S, or pass rusher, I would be all about it. A team isn't going to get something good in return for nothing . . . usually.

Spitz maybe able to yield this team something by a trade or by playing... Thompson seems to almost always lean to the playing yield over any other yield. Spitz wouldn't be on the trading block unless he asked to be, or he wasn't going to make the roster or the Packers think they get get some steal out of it...

I'm not sure I want Smith playing if Wells goes down...

They traded Moll for Derrick Martin, who is a borderline NFL player. That's the best you're going to get for Barbre or Smith, and I don't think either of those guys are even worth as much as Moll. Moll had actually seen quite a bit regular season action with the Packers, some of it at the RT position, where he was not anywhere near the disaster that Barbre was at RT last year.

Our best hope for Barbre in a trade is to go to a team that wants to try him out at guard. He's proven his worthlessness as a tackle. I don't know why McCarthy is letting him play tackle. He almost got Flynn killed.

Barbre has been better at OG than Moll was but Moll was better at OT. Overall the best at one position was Barbre.

You still didn't get the point of my post. If he is on the trading block then of course it would mean the team is trying to trade him. That's obvious (if in fact, true). All I'm saying is, you trade your worst players, you will probably get another bad player back who will not contribute much to this team. Sure there are exceptions, but I'm speaking in generalizations. However, if you bite the bullet and trade a player that actually has some perceived value then you may be able to get a player that can give the Packers some significant value as well. I'm fine with trading the guys you mentioned, but I don't think it will do anything for this team. However, a guy like Spitz with perhaps a draft pick could perhaps improve another area of this team, that's all I'm saying.

I'm fine with keeping him as well because I like him more than many do, I believe.

"beast" wrote:

I really don't think those are the ONLY reasons a player will be put on the trading block. Sometimes it's just a numbers game. If a team thinks they have enough talent to get by with and have a player that is expendable but that might have value to another team, then why not try to trade them? If we can have a decent OLine this year without him, AND improve another area of this team, then I'm all for it.

Now if one wants to argue the legitimacy of status of our OLine without Spitz that's perfectly understandable. I'm sure he would make this roster and he doesn't have to ask for a trade to be put on the trading block.

If this story is true, I'm glad our front office is at least looking into the possibility. It would be sweet to get a desperate team to overpay for Spitz. I don't see it happening, but it would still be sweet.

Moll and Martin were both going to pretty much be roster cuts by their respective teams because both were pretty much bubble players who weren't going to make the cut. It just worked out the Packers got someone who, while not having found a place in Baltimore, has found a niche here in Green Bay as a reserve safety/special teams players. Basically for a player who we were probably going to cut at the end of camp anyways if no trade partners were found.

With Giacomini and Barbre, we might be able to get something similar, but it could all just very likely end up with both of them getting axed after the final preseason game. And as far as Spitz, do we even need to go into how much of a disaster our offensive line was with out much quality depth a year ago? At worst, Spitz is a quality reserve with plenty of starting experience who can fill in at guard or center in case of injury. That's critical for a team who as aspirations for making a deep playoff run this year. Most people thought we'd trade Wells a year ago after Spitz won the starting center job, but we held onto him and were fortunate that we did after Spitz went down for the year.

I think you might be misunderstanding the premise of this trade.

Your WRONG! ... I understand the idea of a trade and I got your point the first time, so you don't have to keep repeating yourself. Why do you keep assuming I don't know what your talking about? Do you think your smarter than everyone or something?

I have a different view point of then you do. That's it!... I agree with your point about that is possible, but it's not what they have done in the past. I disagree with you assuming I don't understand you.

I just don't think Thompson would "bite the bullet" (as you called it). Why? Because he hasn't... not saying he couldn't but he hasn't. Thompson has kept all his players unless they were going to get cut or demanded out. (well other than Favre but that's a whole different story).

Thompson doesn't seem to see players as expendable unless they can't make the 53 man roster or are becoming a problem and are demanding out (not counting the times they were over the cap limit (because of another GM) and had to cut some guys or give some of the mearly bonuses (like the other GM did and would of done)). Your talking about what could they be doing, I'm talking about what has the current group in control done. Two different things.

Could they change their ideas? Yes just like they changed their ideas about trading up for a player in the draft in a while. But they haven't done it yet.

That's why I've been anti trading Spitz and that's why I think the Packers will be, and that seems to go along how they're been thinking of don't trade players unless they can't make the roster or are causing locker room problems.

Also I've read Barbre is sitting out... is he injured or looking into a trade for him? He has played decent at LG so anytime looking for a decent OG might look at him. (He's not bad to horrible at OT, but alright at OG) but not enough to make the roster IMO. Trade a guy that's going to be cut anyways.
