Atari Bigby timetable pushed back
August, 19, 2010

By Kevin Seifert

It appears the Green Bay Packers are going to have an interesting roster decision to make in a few weeks. Safety Atari Bigby told reporters Thursday that it could take him up to eight weeks to recover from his recent ankle surgery, all but ruling himself out for the Sept. 12 season opener at Philadelphia and raising the question of whether he should be placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

If the latter scenario occurs, Bigby wouldn't count against the 53-man roster, but would be ineligible for the Packers' first six games. The other option is to carry Bigby on the roster and make him a game-day inactive until he is ready to return.

Bigby (via Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com): "I don't know what they're going to do. What I'm doing is focusing on getting healthy, getting my ankle back to where it needs to be as fast as I can and as safe as I can. Once I do that, then everything will fall into place."

Part of the decision will no doubt hinge on the preseason performance of rookie safety Morgan Burnett, who has been filling in for Bigby all summer. If the Packers believe Burnett can give them six solid games, they'll be unlikely to use an early season roster spot on Bigby. But if they're concerned about Burnett's progress, they might not have a choice. Stay tuned.

I think Bigby said 4 to 8 weeks... they're just taking worse case time line for the story, and I'm not sure that's from now or when ever he had it worked on.

Did a quick google search. He had surgery on Friday the 6th(of August). Maybe the inactive list route would be best. We dont want him wasting away on the PUP list if he's ready before that 8 week estimate.

I think I'd PUP him... after all this isn't the first time with an injury at that spot. What if he doesn't heal right or has a set back? ... you just cut a guy that might be been able to help this season.

Also he held out and didn't show up for OTAs (which I don't like, plus)... it seems that a lot of Packers players that hold out have a injury season...

This could be his one injury for holding out or he could have more.

I believe you have to start training camp on the PUP in order to be eligible for the regular-season PUP. Does Bigby meet that criterion?

Here's what I found on scout.com. The deadline is the cutdown to 65, which hasn't happened yet:

* PUP list: Physically Unable to Perform -
this List designates players with serious injuries that will keep them from being able to start a season on the 53-man protected list but may be able to return to the roster during the regular season. The players must be placed on this roster at or before the league-wide 65-man summer roster cutdown to be eligible for this designation, and they must stay on this list for at least the first six weeks of the regular season. After this time teams have 3 weeks to evaluate such players after which each such player must be placed on the 53-man roster, season-ending Injured Reserve (IR) or waivers.

Yes, Harris, Bigby and Starks all started training camp on the PUP (I believe) and unless the doctor clears them and they suit up they'll remain on the PUP.

PUP Bigby. That opens up a roster spot for a guy who may surprise us all.

We'll do fine starting the season without Bigby. Just blitz more. I do like Bigby against the run. That's where we'll hurt the most but we were #1 against the run last year and I don't see any reason why we'll fall below top 10 this year.
