I haven't seen many people calling Clay Matthews "elite." He's just good with lots of potential to improve. Nothing wrong with that.

I just haven't seen many calling him elite. Perhaps I have just missed the comments and / or articles. I've mostly seen people stating that he had a fantastic rookie season and will be a threat to opposing QB's in the future.

Everyone keeps bringing up the pash rush and references the Pittsburch game. Well I was there and Clay Matthews beat there LT like a rented mule all day long. There was a blown tuck rule on a challenge that even the mooks sitting around patted me on the shoulder and said we owe you one. I think Jones had a sack or two as well.

How about we talk about the street free agent d-backs that couldn't bat down Ben's pop fly passes or even could have been sacks like the one Cullen Jenkins whiffed on that would have iced the game. We're in better shape than some of you want to realize.

I argued on that point as well last season.. I would have we rather fill the backend of the roster, after DB's started dropping like flies with aged proven veterans..

If I am going down in flames.. I am going down with guys that have been there before if I have to choose replacements.

He got to the Pro Bowl in his rookie year. He should improve.

He's got football smarts and generations of experience in his blood.

He should be an elite player sooner than later.

Criticisms of his rushing are he has but one move. Well, that will change. Give the kid some time to grow and learn from experience.

I agree he certainly has the potential to become elite player. I just don't think he's close yet. I'm just saying I haven't seen many people claiming that he's elite either. Just really good with unlimited potential. He needs to get back on the practice field though, imo. Best of luck Clay!

You have to bring some very, very exotic blitzes if you want to get pressure with one overrated OLB and another one who, regardless of who it's going to be, is just not very good at getting to the passer.

"Rockmolder" wrote:

How is Clay Matthews overrated? I know there are plenty of others here who share your opinion, but I'm not one of them. He played great last year as a rookie, and he should only get better. I also think it's a little early to write off Brad Jones and Brandon Chillar. Jones showed some pass rushing skills as a rookie last year, and Chillar has looked good at OLB in practice. There is plenty of hope for our pass rush this year. Why all the gloom and doom after one preseason game?

"pack93z" wrote:

I have been critical of how some, mainly media types and some portion of the Packer fan base does overrate Matthews at this point. And that doesn't mean he isn't a fine player that played well last season.

IMO, he is a one dimensional pass rusher at this point that relies on raw speed and power only... more speed than anything.. and a number of times I have stated that I hope he continues to develop and build a set of pass rushing moves to expand his game. And the context of such comments are based when I heard him openly state that he needs to come up with more post sack celebrations.. I would rather have him focus on expanding his game over celebration routines..

For a first year player he was outstanding.. but IMO, he has a ways to go before some loft him into an elite pass rusher.

On that note.. I think Brad Jones is going to take a giant step this season.. and if Poppinga can play similar to game one of the preseason.. we should have solid rotational depth at the OLB... Chillar should be able to supplement that as well.. although I think he lacks natural pass rushing skills.

"Greg C." wrote:

Brad Jones did next to nothing when he actually got some RTs on him. He has the raw speed to run by them, but one push and he's way off his trajectory to the QB. Once he gets engaged to RTs, he's lost.

Apparently, Poppinga is looking really good. And when our coaching staff is talking Poppinga up, something not right. Don't get me wrong, he actually could've improved all of a sudden, but Poppinga hasn't wowed me in anyway, besides his pile-jumping skills.

And I agree with Pack93 on Matthews. He's one sided. He ran by LTs last year, LTs totally whiffed on him, got hustle sacks and got bad blocking TEs on him earlier in the season.

Now I know that, when an O-line executes their blocks perfectly and the QB gets it off in time, you can't get a sack, but out of all his 10 sacks last year, he used some real pass rushing moves on just 2 off them. He did somesort of a bullrush on a TE, who he then backed off from and ran around and he made a KGB-like spin against the Bengals.

I'd love for him to prove me wrong. I'd love for all of our OLBs to prove me wrong, but I just don't see it happening.

I have a vivid memory of him throwing the Cardinals left tackle out of his way in the last regular season game last year. I could be mistaken and it could have been some one else or it could have been a dream. That said if I remember it correctly it was quite impressive.

I agree that he has a lot to work on but the kid has the work ethic and the nonstop motor to improve on those areas of his game which he needs to. I don't think we could have asked more of him last year and I'm sure that's the sentiment of most of the people here on the forum. I don't think it is so much that we over rate him, but that we are excited he really showed a lot of that potential we hoped to see in him having moved up to take him.

While he's not the most polished, there's a lot to like about Clay Matthews. With the way he presents himself along with the way he plays, he doesn't care about the way his position is supposed to be played--he cares about how FOOTBALL is supposed to be played.

High effort and the will to succeed is what will make Matthews great for years to come.

2010 first-round OL Bryan Bulaga has wasted little time making his presence felt, establishing himself as the front-runner to begin the season as the starting left guard and proving to be one of the team's five best offensive linemen, according to McCarth

"RaiderPride" wrote:

It's great that Bulaga is doing well and it's probably due to his own skill and talent, but the fact that through all of Ted Thompson's reign as GM we have not had a more solid option at LG is really sad.

LOL come on I'm a True Packer Fan. I just found that fact to be slightly disappointing and really sad. I love TT, don't get me wrong, but we've had so many problems with our line and after 5 years it finally gets addressed. McCarthy envisions a team that wins the game in the trenches and I'm glad were finally getting an OL that could do that.

beast (12m) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (13m) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23m) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (35m) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (44m) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (1h) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (1h) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (1h) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (2h) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (2h) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (2h) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm

beast (3h) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (4h) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (4h) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (5h) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (5h) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (5h) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (5h) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (5h) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (5h) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (5h) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (5h) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (5h) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (5h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (5h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (5h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (5h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (5h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (5h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (5h) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (5h) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (5h) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (5h) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (5h) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (5h) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (5h) : Packers will get in
beast (5h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (6h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (6h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (7h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (9h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (9h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (9h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (9h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
