The Soviet national anthem was pretty badass.

Of course, it might be better to have a bad national anthem.

Just imagine what a Goebbels and company could have done with a *good* song. Shudder!

Maybe letting the French have the best song is good after all. 🙂
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Non.....did i "Make your ears bleed"???
Yes, it IS a difficult song to sing. That was a big concern, that i could hit all the notes and not kill it.
Whether or not there are "better" songs, it IS our national anthem. So i take alot of pride with it.
And as was said, over the years i have heard people butcher it. They want to turn it into a personal "performance" to say "look what I can do!" instead of using it to honor our country. That bugs the heck out of me.
But i'm also glad it is only a minute and a half long. Less time to mess it up!
If i had to sing ALL the verses, i'd probably faint!

I absolutely agree about your point that people use it to show off. I was impressed with how you approached it.

As to taking pride in the song simply because it's our national anthem... eh. Just like you take pride in our president because he's our president?

To be honest, I haven't heard your performance yet. The forum software has an odd incompatibility with Chrome, so I can't play embedded Youtube videos from the forum. I'll look it up on Youtube when I get home this evening. I'm sure you nailed it cold.

The song or words matter little. Our anthem might be the most boring in the world, but it gives me goosebumbs when an entire crowd sings along.

The biggest problem to me is that they always want to have the biggest star they can get to sing the national anthem, like that makes it better. Just put the words up on the board and let everyone sing along. I'm pretty sure that you don't even have to put the words down like some karaoke bar and most people will sing along. Heck, even I know half of your national anthem by now.

You tell me what's more impressive and which one gives you goosebumbs.

No disrespect to Kelly Clarkson, at all.

I have to agree with Wade. The French have a pretty good national anthem. So do the English and the Italians.

The German one, of course, sucks.

Agreed Rock,
I don't care for the big names singing their own version while the masses of people watch.

This Country was founded on the principle of being a Nation by the people and for the people.

The "world cup" one did it for me. Of course that's in a place where it's "us" against "them". Thus, the anthem is taken more seriously then at a local sporting event.
The Clarkson version, to me it was more of a "performance" then a song to honor our country. I myself could "jazz" it up like that too. Seriously, i could. But i didn't feel that was the place to do something like that. I mean, we all know Kelly can sing, has a pretty voice. I would have been more impressed if she would have sang it "normal". That's just my opinion, of course, for what it's worth.

Mass......i respect the position of President, no matter who is the guy in office. Even if i don't agree with the guy's position on things. If i saw Obama, i would not be disrespectful. I wouldn't scream obcenities at him, or do anything to show disrespect. I can respect the position, if not the actual person. If i met him, i would shake his hand and call him "Mr. President".
That's the way it SHOULD be.
Is America perfect? Nope. It never was, and never will be. But it's MY country, and in my view the best in the world. Again, just my opinion. I know there are those that disagree with me on this.
